Žaltys

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Žaltys is a Baltic spirit that is a guardian of the home. It was kept as a pet, and in modern Baltic tradition it lives by the stove, and is a sacred animal of the sun goddess Saulė, who would weep if she saw a dead Žaltys. The Žaltys was kept in a special area of the house, and the household would gather at certain times to pray to it.

The Žaltys is a symbol of fertility, and its basic form is that of a harmless grass snake. However, some myths describe the Žaltys with dragon-like characteristics.
