Žďár nad Sázavou (IPA: [ˈʒɟaːr ˈnat saːzavoʊ̯]; German: Saar) is a city in Vysočina Region of the Czech Republic. It has cca 24,000 inhabitants. It is the administrative capital of the Žďár nad Sázavou District. The city is the centre of tourism - in winter you can go skiing, in summer you can go cykling or bathing. There is very good transport situation, especially you can use direct train connection from Prague or Brno.
Zdar nad Sazavou gained prominence after the WWII when the communist government decided to build steelworks in the city - called ZDAS. Within less than twenty years the population of the city grew five-fold (from about 3.000 in 1950 to 15.000 in 1969) and number of inhabitants continued to grow until the 1980s. With the fall of communist regime in 1989 the significance of heavy industry started to fall yet ZDAS continues production up to this day.
Villages Mělkovice, Radonín, Stržanov and Veselíčko are administrative parts of Žďár nad Sázavou. The Pilgrimage Church of Saint John of Nepomuk, one of the World Heritage Sites, is situated there.
