[edit] Yoshinobu?
I find it hard to believe that Ōkuma went to meet with "Shogun Yoshinobu" in Edo; Yoshinobu never once set foot in Edo during his time as shogun. (see Tokugawa Munefusa (2005). Tokugawa yonbyakunen no naisho-banashi: raibaru bushō-hen (Tokyo: Bungei-shunju), p. 161). As such, I believe this implies that Ōkuma went to Edo and presented his proposal to the shogunate, and the shogunate (and not necessarily the shogun) ordered his arrest. Can anyone further investigate this? -Tadakuni 05:24, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
- Also, it seems strange that one might "declare" Ōkuma a ronin, since a rōnin is simply a masterless samurai and does not inherently imply a criminal status, and Okuma was a Saga-han retainer... -Tadakuni 05:32, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
- I think I've solved the discrepancy-- note the following excerpt from Ōkuma's article on the Japanese Wikipedia: 慶応3年(1867年)、副島と共に将軍 徳川慶喜に大政奉還を勧めることを計画し、脱藩して京都へ赴いたが、捕縛の上、佐賀に送還され、1か月の謹慎処分を受けた。 Translation: "In Keiō 3 (1867), together with Soejima, he planned to recommend resignation to the shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu; [they] left the domain without permission (dappan shite) and went to Kyoto, but they were arrested and sent back to Saga, where they were placed in kinshin (confinement) for one month." Can anyone contribute a print source to back this up? -Tadakuni 05:38, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
- Nevermind, I found an appropriate citation. -Tadakuni 05:53, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
