[edit] Boundary changes
Changes to the electoral boundaries were considered by the 2007 Electoral Commission. The Belmont area has been shifted into the Rimutaka electorate, and the Crofton Downs area has been moved from Wellington Central electorate into Ohariu-Belmont [2]. With the removal of Belmont, the Electoral Commission has renamed this electorate back to its former name of Ohariu, and it is one of eleven electorate names to include a macron.
The reasons given were that while the existing Ohariu-Belmont electorate’s population was well within the North Island quota of 57,243 at +2%, with the addition of Crofton Downs (moved from Wellington Central electorate) this increased the population to nearly +4%. As the current boundary between it and Hutt South is geographically very strong, some of the surplus population had to be moved into Rimutaka by moving the suburb of Belmont. There were four objections to these changes which were disallowed.
The Ohariu electorate now consists of the communities of Westhaven, Tawa (excluding Linden), Johnsonville, Ngaio, Crofton Downs, Khandallah, Korokoro, Maungaraki and Normandale.
[edit] Electorate population
The electorate population is estimated to be 56,532[3].
Another estimate was 57,419, see Elections NZ

The earlier Ohariu electorate was created for the 1978 election, and included some areas in the former Karori electorate. In 1993 it was renamed Onslow.
For the first MMP election of 1996, it also included Belmont so was called Ohariu-Belmont up to 2008.
