Øksnes is a municipality in the county of Nordland, Norway.
Øksnes was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Langenes was separated from Øksnes July 1, 1919 - but it was again merged with Øksnes January 1, 1964.
[edit] The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Øksnes (Norse Yxnes), since the first church was built there. The first element is probably an old name of the island Skogsøya (Norse *Yxn), the last element is nes n 'headland'. The old name of the island is identical with the word yxn (plural form of uxi m 'ox'). The mountains of the island have maybe been compared with a flock of oxen.
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1986). It shows two fishhooks.
