[edit] General remarks
Railway museum with an extensive collection of 600 mm narrow gauge passenger railcars. Ö.Sl.J. operates traffic on two different lines:
- Traffic with steam on the 600 mm narrow-gauge line with locomotives and carriages dating from the period 1890-1925 between Mariefred and Läggesta junction, circa 4 km.
- Traffic with the railcar type Y7 from the 1950s on the standard gauge (4 ft 8½ in (1,435 mm)) between Läggesta and Taxinge-Näsby, circa 7 km.
[edit] Mariefred – Läggesta
This is the heart of Ö.Sl.J. The line was originally the SJ standard gauge line from Läggesta to Mariefred, which the Swedish State Railways (SJ) operated until the mid-1960's when the line was closed. Ö.Sl.J., which began on a small scale at the Lina brick works in Södertälje in 1959, took after a few years over the track and station in Mariefred and rebuilt the track to 600 mm narrow gauge.
[edit] Läggesta – Taxinge-Näsby
When the new SJ main line "Svealandsbanan" (Södertälje - Eskilstuna) was built in 1995, the traffic on the old Södertälje - Eskilstuna line was discontinued and the track was torn up on most of the line. After a few years Ö.Sl.J. got a permission to use the rest of the line and rented a type Y7 railcar to begin with a trial period in 1998. Ö.Sl.J has plans to convert the line into 600 mm narrow gauge. These plans have so far been successfully obstructed by locals who want the line to be converted into a bicycle track.
