Ózd is a city in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, Northern Hungary, 40 km (25 mi) away from county seat Miskolc. Ózd is the second largest city of the county.
[edit] History
The area has been inhabited since ancient times. The village Ózd was mentioned first in 1242. The modern city came into being with the unification of the towns Ózd, Bolyok and Sajóvárkony during the Socialist era of Hungary, when the northern part of the country was developed into a centre of heavy industry. Ózd has a large Roma population.
A Jewish community existed in this city prior to WWII, when it was destroyed by Nazi policies, and a Jewish cemetery, in need of restoration, still exists.
