Ñico Saquito

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ñico Saquito (b. Santiago, Cuba, 1901 - d. 1983) was a Cuban guitarist. Saquito was the founder of the guaracha style of Cuban song, which featured four-line stanzas and lyrics of a jovial nature. By the age of 15 he had already attracted attention for his songwriting, and abandoned a career in baseball to join The Castillo Quartet, spending much of the 1920s touring Cuba with the group. After this he returned to Santiago and founded the group Guaracheos de Oriente, which went on tour in Venezuela in 1950. He remained in Venezuela until about 1960 when political conditions forced a return to Cuba. Later in his life Saquito played mostly in Havana, and in 1982 he was recorded by the Cuban national recording company along with the groups El Quarteto Patria and El Duo Cubano. The recordings were released in America on World Circuit in 1983 under the title Good-bye Mr. Cat; Saquito died later that same year.
