ESSEC is one of the elite French Grandes écoles, and as such it requires passing extremely selective, first-past-the-post entrance examinations.

Concours Grandes Ecoles: This entrance examination only concerns the “ESSEC MBA” program. It takes place between May and June. Every year, ESSEC recruits about 360 students through this examination process. Most of the students who sit for the entrance examination come from the French “classes préparatoires”, also called “classes prépa”. The “classes préparatoires” last two years and their only purpose is to prepare students for the French Business Schools’ selective entrance examination.

Students applying for the "ESSEC M.S. Specialized Masters" Programs can choose to take either Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) or the French equivalent Tage Mage in addition to specific language examinations such as TOEFL or IELTS for English and TEF for French.

ESSEC, along with many other business schools, tests the candidates on their knowledge in mathematics, economics, history, philosophy, general culture and languages. The candidates must also pass a series of oral exams in order to enter the school.

The ESSEC MBA is an innovative model among MBA formats, as it is aimed at students with no professional experience, instead of senior executives. The MBA diploma is only delivered upon completion of a required amount of internships to compensate for the lack of work experience.

The Specialized Master’s degrees are accredited by the “Conférence des Grandes Ecoles” in France. To follow these programs, students must speak French fluently. Some of them are now entirely taught in English. One of ESSEC's specialized masters, the M.S. Strategy and Management of International Business was ranked 6th in the Financial Times 2005 European Masters in Management ranking in addition of being ranked 1st for six consecutive years in France.
