École secondaire l'Essor is a French-language high school located in Tecumseh, Ontario, Canada (formerly St. Clair Beach), established in 1979. It serves the Francophone (French speaking) population of Essex County.
The name l'Essor was coined by Florence Limoges is a portmanteau combining Essex and Windsor. It belongs to Conseil scolaire de district des écoles catholiques de Sud-Ouest. Essor also refers to the French word for taking flight or to soar.
The small school, participates in a lot of local activities in the francophone community. It has a very high percentage of graduates, and high test marks. "L'aigle seul a le droit de fixer le soleil" Being as the mascot is the eagle (translated):"only the eagle has the right to reach for the top"
The school regularly makes headlines in the local newspapers. In 1994, a student dropped a vial of skunk oil in the school corridors, sending 55 to the hospital and causing C$34,000 in damage. A similar incident occurred in June 2003 when a student released a substance similar to pepper spray in the school. This incident, however, only affected 8 students and one staff who were treated by paramedics on site.

[edit] Mock Shooter Scenario
Recently, the school has made many headlines due to the recent mock "shooter scenario" that took place Tuesday, May 29th 2007. The controversial exercise initiated by Ontario Provincial Police, took on such a realistic tone, thanks in part to the actor playing the deranged shooter, that some students taking part were reduced to tears. The shooters were using real weapons, a C-8 assault rifle, a Glock semi-automatic handgun and two other pistols. They were firing loud blanks that left shell casings littering the floor throughout the school.
"It's as a result of what happened in Columbine," said Sgt. Fleming.
"We found that our traditional techniques of contain and negotiate, doesn't work when someone doesn't want to be negotiated with. So the faster you can enter the school and remove that threat, literally seconds count. It's like a fire department going to put out a fire. They don't wait until all the firefighters are there, they start putting water on the fire as soon as they get there. We're doing the same thing."
The scenario saw a pair of heavily armed women, played by drama students from the University of Windsor, enter the school at around 8:46 a.m. and begin randomly shooting students. Officers taking part knew little about what was going on at the school. Students from L'Essor and St. Clair College played the roles of injured students with gruesome gunshot wounds applied with makeup. One of the attackers was shot and killed by responding officers, but the shooter with the assault rifle managed to shoot a number of people before barricading herself in a classroom with dozens of students. She ordered them all on the floor and forbade them all from looking up.
Grade 12 student Jacob McCourt was one of the students ordered to the floor."I was actually thinking I was really well prepared but when she was coming in with her weapon, it was scary," said McCourt. "Your adrenaline really plays with your emotions. Even when I got out of there I was still shaking because she did such a good job."
However, this exercise has sparked much debate among parents and members of the community. One reader of the Windsor Star even went as far as to ask the faculty of the school and the OPP to "give their heads a shake".
