Álvaro Murillo, one of the top goal scorers in the history of Costa Rica, is considered in his nation to be one of the best soccer forwards of the 50's. He played almost his entire career in Deportivo Saprissa, and held the record for more goals scored for that team until it was broken in the 70's by Edgar Marín.
Murillo was part of the Saprissa team that went on a World Tour in 1959, becoming the first Latin American soccer squad to ever do such a trip. Not only that, he was the top goal scorer of that trip as well, which led to offers by European clubs such as Genoa C.F.C. of Italy, Club Atlético Huracán of Argentina and FK Austria Wien, as well as teams from Venezuela and Mexico, but preferred to stay with Saprissa in Costa Rica because he was going to school during that period of time as well. With Costa Rica's national team, he was part of the Chaparritos de Oro squad that won a silver medal in the Pan-American Games held in Buenos Aires back in the 50's.
