Zuhair Al-Sabban was born in 1913 in Souq Saruja, a popular quarter of Damascus, Syria. Brought up in an environment rich in handcrafted masterpieces, he was deeply influenced by their beauty. His first artistic attempts came at an early age. His friendship with well-known artists of that age- such as Taufiq Tareq, Mahmoud Jalal, Salah Nashef, as well as their discussions on art constituted an important factor in the development of Sabban’s artistic personality.

His stay in Egypt (1931-1940) enriched his experience. He met a number of Egyptian artists (Hasan Kamel …etc). While in Alexandria he painted several oil paintings. Zuhair Al-Sabban is considered one of the pioneer Syrian artists who established the modern art movement in Syria. His works include landscapes, scenes from social life, traditional architecture. Sabban took part in the annual art exhibitions in the Damascus National Museum and won the third prize in 1956 and the second prize 1957. His work is in the collections of the Damascus National Museum and the Azem palace (Museum of the Arts and Popular Traditions).
