[edit] Znode

I apologize about The Citadel site. But I don't understand how I am the one at fault? Have I not linked my source for the general flag officers? Please, link me to the correction and I will more than gladly change my information. Furthermore, the intention of the article is not a comparison at all. As I have told 207.144.53.83 who left that rude remark on the discussion page, I have linked my source on the Flag officer and I haven't touched other pages. On the contrary 207.144.53.83 and another individual (both in charge of the VMI site) vandalizing The Citadel page for the past week constantly. Furtheremore they have reverted back any and all changes made by other individuals as well as a mod. Please tell me what's wrong and I will more than gladly change it. I don't mean to cause any contraversy. Thank you

[edit] mid-June vandalism accusation

Yo, I'm not adding nonsense. I'm making a tag to then be used in later instances.

Explain to me what I'm doing that's nonsense, and why it's nonsense. I have no interest in vandalizing Wikipedia, but I'm also not going to modify my entire behaviour without knowing whether or not I've actually done anything wrong...

Once again, you have not pointed out any specific instance to illustrate what you consider "vandalism." If I knew specifics, I could cease doing those specifics. Are you the person who deleted the "b0h" template?

[edit] Bill Clinton

Hi, regarding the birthname of President Bill Clinton, I would like to refer you to see William J. Clinton Presidential Library and also his autobiography book My Life to ensure that his name is William Jefferson Blyth III not IV ! I believe his autobiograohy and the Presidential Library website are more acceptable, Regards. --Sina 22:22, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Blackface

Hey. :) Just a quick note of thanks for catching the vandalism at Blackface. I've been a little preoccupied lately with Afrocentrism. Peace 2 u. deeceevoice 10:36, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  • I'm not sure the removal of that section qualified as vandalism, especially since the (anonymous) person in question gave a cogent explanation at Talk:Blackface about the reason for the removal. You might want to take a look there, and possibly respond: he/she may be wrong, but is apparently not a vandal. -- Jmabel | Talk 05:10, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC)

I have reverted your speedy tag because it doesn't meet any of the criteria for speedy deletion. It may be school vanity but that is not grounds for deletion per CSD, you may put it up for AfD but please make sure it meets the criteria if you put an article up for speedy. gren グレン 11:57, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] How to embed MIDI

Hi, I'm new to Wikipedia. I wrote (well, significantly edited) an article on interval class to which I'd like to add a MIDI file. Is that possible, or must it be converted to audio? Either way, could you give me the necessary coding? Thanks! Psfitzgibbon 05:51, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] AIR COMBAT AUDIO UPLOAD

I have little skill in the use of your pages, I am 72 years old; I have no interest in argument or vandalism.

I am in the process of converting CD to OGG digital recordings of historical air battles (the real thing) suitable for link from F-105, Wild Weasel, Rolling Thunder, Ground Attack Aircraft etc.

How many minutes of OGG will you accept? How do I find the instructions for UP-LOAD. --spoongap

[edit] Question About Audio Uploads

Hi, I'm currently helping shape up the Tupac Shakur article, and I've run into a question or two. One of the suggestions made by the reviewers of the article (for Featured Article status) was to add Audio. However, we don't seem to have any subject matter experts on Wiki Audio working on the article right now. I'm searching but can't find much on the legal requirements to upload songs, or portions thereof. I'm sure we can't upload entire songs, but I can't find much guidance on the legality of uploading snippets of songs, interviews, etc. Any guidance you could give would be appreciated. Thanks.SqlPac 02:43, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the answer to this! I'm still not comfortable uploading any audio for this myself, but I'll post your suggestion to the article discussion in case someone else on the article is more comfortable with uploading song snippets. Thanks again!SqlPac 23:46, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] How do I create ogg files

Hello... I was thinking of creating some audio files(with word pronunciations). How do I create files in the ogg format? DO help.

[edit] Spoken article audio upload filename

I was making a brief recording for a spoken article very early this morning, and have never contributed to Wikipedia before. When I reached the uploading stage, I wasn't quite sure about the "canonicalization" format that was required. It seemed to suggest that if I had an article titled "War of the Banana Wranglers", I should name the spoken audio file "War of the Banana Wranglers.ogg". However, having named my audio thusly, the file, once uploaded, contains the uncommon (judging from all of the other uploaded files I've seen in Spoken) filename in this form: "--War_of_the_Banana_Wranglers.ogg--". So it seems that the audio should just be named "War of the Banana Wranglers.ogg"? Thanks for any help you can provide. (Don't really know if you're the right guy to ask or not. :)

[edit] Canonicalization

Thanks for the helpful response. Just a minor point: it is canonicalization, not canonization, although I believe the wording on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia/Recording guidelines page is confusing (see the second bulleted tip under Production Notes for a reference to the aforementioned "canonicalization"). I'll be uploading again with correct naming convention, but if you agree that the guide is a bit confusing (I'm probably just missing something) then maybe the wording could be changed... Thanks again! Ooddiittyy 17:08, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Paris Hilton : 'air headed heiress' related

Regarding the 'air headed heiress' edition that I contributed : I believe that it is neutral since it is a term that was coined by the print media. Therefore it merits to be mentioned.

I contributed this in good faith and not to sling mud on PH.

If you think that there is a better manner (by rewriting the phrase) to mention the 'air-headed heiress' title that she has earned herself and (perhaps) also the reason for this, please feel free to edit my contribution. My intention is only to state facts and in no manner pollute the page with personal feelings. Thanks for your comments. Great work. Have a nice day.

[edit] Hilarious edit you made

I found your (afterwards self-reverted) counter-vandalism edit here hilarious. No offense intended in any way, but that made me laugh. Wikipedia counter vandalism unit: Removing libel on sight, even towards fictional super-villians. :D --tjstrf 04:54, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] uploaded new version of audio file not being used

I tried to upload new versions of car.ogg and cdr.ogg but when I try to play them I get the old versions. (you can reply here I've watchlisted you) Ideogram 15:48, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

If you did correctly use the "Upload a new version of this file" link on the already-existing old image, then you might just need to clear your browser cache. -- Znode (talk) 08:09, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
That was it, thanks. Ideogram 08:36, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] sun god

Thanks for the new Sun God photo, but frankly I'm not sure I'd call it better -- it's so far back that you can't make out much detail at all in the actual statue. I cropped mine to show less of the pedestal and more of the statue. It would be nice if you could make out the statue in the thumbnails. Jsnell 21:47, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Although I have to say, the blue sky in your photo is excellent. Perhaps you could provide a cropped version that showed a bit more God and a bit less Ivy? Jsnell 21:50, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
I don't believe that convenience is ever an easy sacrifice to make. Perhaps the answer is to provide (on the Sun God article page alone, not in uses elsewhere such as the UCSD page) both a full shot and a detail shot of the statue itself. Jsnell 22:29, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
Perhaps the "sculpture" template will help. Jsnell 22:48, 30 June 2006 (UTC)
When in doubt, go to David (Michelangelo), I always say... wait a second, I never say that! Jsnell 22:57, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hello

I was wondering how to add audio to wikipedia? Where do i upload it?

[edit] Released MP3s.

I'm sending out a permission request for some MP3s. If it's granted, I assume that they should be converted to Ogg Vorbis format for uploading, but how? What's the least lossy way to do so? grendel|khan 15:14, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia sound copyright

Hi

I would like, if possible, to know how I can be certain if a song (classical music) I download from Wikipedia sound is copyright free. I want to know if I can give it to others or use it in my work. I am a copyright-violation-phobic, and want to be 100% certain that I have permission to use something from an authorized person.

I do not know how to find your answer. So please send it to rbnium-job@yahoo.com.au.

Thank you very much Regards, Ruben

[edit] The uploading of audio files for A-class article Ilaiyaraaja

Dear Znode: I am working on a Wiki about a music composer called Ilaiyaraaja. This musician is very prolific: he has composed more than 4000 songs. I would like to put up 30-second audio clips of his songs (which are in .ogg format and are, on average, 550 kb in size each). I have a some questions about this:

Because of this musicians enormous and varied output, to be even barely representative of his work I may need to upload between 30 to 50 (max.) 30-second audio clips, possibly on a separate page dedicated to these audio samples that will be linked to the main article itself. Is it OK/legal to do this? If I indeed put up a max. of 50 audio clips, that would mean (50 x 550 kb) roughly 27.5 Mb of audio clips on that page. I understand that a minimum file size of 20 Mb is stipulated by Wikipedia. But what about a cluster of audio clips totalling 27.5 Mb like the one I'm proposing?

Would really appreciate to hear from you about this. With regards, AppleJuggler 13:45, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] streaming .ogg files

How do I get .ogg files on a page to stream - i.e. you click on them and they just start playing via the browser?

For example, if you go to the bottom of this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dizzy_gillespie and click on the sound sample of "Hot House" - play in browser (beta), you get directed to this page: http://tools.wikimedia.de/~gmaxwell/jorbis/JOrbisPlayer.php?path=Hot+House.ogg&wiki=en

I'd like to create that streaming command for sound samples on this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinson_Valega

How do I do that?

Thanks!!

[edit] Adding audio media Bradley Joseph

Hi! I'd like to add audio media to Bradley Joseph. I've read about adding audio media but its like another language to me, still no clue. I think I need special software but I can't download to this puter which is my work computer. Can you help? He has files on his site and MP3.com if that helps. Not sure if that qualifies for fair use. Thanks. Cricket02 18:15, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Audio files on Wikipedia

I have tape recordings made on a Wollensak in the 1950s and subsequently transferred to cassette tapes - about six hours in all. These are original recordings of the poet John Berryman reading his own work in private gatherings and in one memorable public speech. They are original recordings, not under any copyright restriction that I can think of -- historical documents, if you will.

I think they are worth putting on Wikipedia, if only to preserve them for posterity. Berryman's place in history is far from secure, but since I personally would kill for a chance to hear Ezra Pound read his poetry (there is only one example, to my knowledge, on the entire internet), and since some people regard Berryman as being in the same general category of famous lyrical poets, it seems to me that future generations should at least have access to this material. A long time ago I offered to donate these tapes to the Library of Congress and to the Smithsonian . . . neither of these institutions took the time or even had the courtesy to reply.

I transferred the data to .mp3 files (without much loss, I think) so the recordings now exist on CDs. However, I am basically looking at a brick wall when I think about putting these on Wikipedia (say in the Wikipedia article on John Berryman). Can Wikipedia support six hours of audio files in a single article? Do I really have to use ogg, and if so, how should I do it? (I just want to convert six .mp3 files to .ogg files and upload them). Is this even a good idea? Perhaps there are other ways to archive these recordings for posterity, although I can't think of any at the moment.

Your comments would be appreciated. Btarski 19:38, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your comments. However, I have to tell you that I think that Wikipedia has a far better chance of being around 100 years from now than the Internet Archive does, and I think that Wikipedia is already more comprehensive (the "archive" does not contain even a single audio recording of Pound). Therefore, my question is: can I put these audio recordings on Wikipedia (in the article on John Berryman), and if so, can you suggest a simple way?Btarski 21:54, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Converting iTunes music to ogg format for use with Wikipedia.

Hello Znode,

How do I convert iTunes music to ogg format so I can use it with my Wikipedia article?

Can you direct me to a relevant website?

Thanks,

I found a tool that helped: CooolSoft Power MP3 Cutter. It didn't work with iTunes music, though.

[edit] help adding sound sample box

Znode, I hope you can help me. The sound sample boxes I added to the Ellis Paul article were removed. I asked for help on my Talk page and received a few responses. I have been told I violated the "image use policy" which is confusing to me (I am very new to Wiki editing and am truly trying hard and reading alot to understand it all!) since I was not uploading images. I had indicated (regarding copyright) that the artist/owner of the sound samples had given me permission to use them on Wikipedia. I also tagged them (later) as being 30-second sound samples. One was a spoken word poem, so I tagged it accordingly. Would you please tell me what I should do to have the sound files retained on Wikipedia and not be removed? Thank you for your time and consideration. Kmzundel 16:25, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for audio files.

Hello Znode,

I have a number of audio files that I've included in the discography section of Harvest (band).

I'd like to make sure that the fair use rationale I've given is sufficient to justify their inclusion.

Could you take a look at the rationale for one of them and give me some feedback?

I'd really appreciate it,

jamielng 17:07, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

P.S. I based my rationale on audio files I found used in The Beatles Wikipedia article.

Hello again,
I've since edited the fair use rationale for the samples I've uploaded. Instead of using rationale like I found with the Beatles samples, I likened my rationale to that of "Image:MariahCareyWeBelongTogether.ogg."
I'm still open to any feedback you might have.
Thanks,
jamielng 00:21, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
