Zhong Gong (Simplified Chinese: 中功; Traditional Chinese: 中功; pinyin: zhōnggōng; Wade-Giles: chung1 kung1) is a controversial movement based on variations of Chinese breathing exercises known as qigong. According to the New York Times, the full name translates to "China Health Care and Wisdom Enhancement Practice." It was founded in the early 1990s by Zhang Hongbao.
Zhang Hongbao claimed in 2003 to have about 38 million followers, Chinese cult critic Sima Nan says it is one of several qigong movements larger than Falun Gong, which claims 100 million adherents (while the Chinese government puts the figure for the latter closer to 30 million).
