[edit] Plot

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

War has begun! Orochimaru (disguised as the Sand's Kazekage) takes the Third Hokage prisoner, while four Sound ninjas erect an impenetrable chakra barrier around them. They also create subsections within the barrier, protecting themselves from attack from any direction.

Outside the village walls, a group of Sand ninjas combine their chakra to summon three giant snakes, which breach the walls and attack the village. Meanwhile, at the Chunin Exam stadium, Sasuke's match is interrupted when Orochimaru puts his plan into action. Temari and Kankuro are ordered by Baki to get Gaara to safety until he recovers, leaving Sasuke to chase after them while Genma takes on Baki.

At his guard post, Ibiki Morino sizes up the situation and keeps his subordinates up-to-date. He tells them how Orochimaru was passed over for the position of Fourth Hokage, and how he regards Orochimaru as an especially scary guy. Since Ibiki is the commanding officer of the Konoha ANBU Torture and Interrogation Force, that is not something to be taken lightly. A messenger tells Ibiki about the snakes, and he takes a squad to reinforce that area.

At the stadium, Kakashi and Gai confront Kabuto and a large group of Sound ninjas, while Sakura watches, bewildered. Orochimaru reveales his motivation to the Third Hokage; basically, he "likes to see moving things. They're boring when they don't move."

Kakashi orders Sakura to wake up Naruto and Shikamaru, then take the newly-formed team and go after Sasuke. They are to stop Sasuke from pursuing Gaara, then fall back and take cover. Kakashi tells her to be cautious, since this is an A-rank mission, just like the one to the Land of Waves. The episode ends.

Spoilers end here.

[edit] Trivia

  • Raido Namiashi, the jonin serving as the Third Hokage's assistant during the third Chunnin exam, is severely injured in this episode. However, he recovers and appears briefly during the Sasuke Retrieval Arc.

  • For unknown reasons blood was actually added in the dub version of this episode 3 times. One time is near the start of the episode the guard next to the hokage is shown with a kunai stabbed into him with blood around it which was not in the original version, soon after more kunai's were thrown into the guard(this happened in the original but blood was added in the dub). finally later in the episode a man is jumping across structures in the leaf village when kunais pierce him in the original there was just an impact effect in the dub however, blood spurts from the wound.
