Zeitgeist ((audio) ) is The Smashing Pumpkins' official sixth album (excluding Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music, freely distributed via the Internet). German for "Spirit of the Age," it is set to be released on July 7, 2007. It will be the first official album to be released by the band since 2000, and the first new material to be released since two of its original members, vocalist and guitarist Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, reunited in 2006. It is unlikely that the other two original members of the band, guitarist James Iha and bassist D'arcy Wretzky, will appear on the album.[1]

Initially it was reported that the new album would be produced by Roy Thomas Baker, and the band will also be working with producer Terry Date. However, in March of 2007 it was reported that Zeitgeist was produced by Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin, with Roy Thomas Baker and Terry Date working separately on various tracks.[2] It will be the band's first release on Reprise Records.[3]

In early December, four alleged demos from the sessions were released on file-sharing networks, though these were revealed to be a hoax. Spin later reported that they were recordings by British band Amy Blue, where the band's frontman, Simon Chatterman, said that his band had been "toying with the idea of pissing off a few file sharers" and "thought it would be funny to upload [their] EP as the Smashing Pumpkins and [with titles] from Corgan's poetry book, Blinking with Fists."[4] However, Billy Corgan did later reveal four new songs during a Los Angeles club show that may end up on the album.[2]

[edit] Development

The first mention of a Smashing Pumpkins reunion was in a full-page advertisement bought by Billy Corgan in the June 21, 2005 issue of Chicago Tribune, announcing his intentions to reunite the band.[5] Later that year the reunion was made official,[6] and in 2006 the band began recording material.[7]

Although of the original band members only Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlin officially reunited, they may be joined by others. Former Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur, who replaced D'arcy Wretzky on bass for the Smashing Pumpkins' last tour, stated that "My services are always there to play my favorite songs. If D'arcy [Wretzky] is not available, I'm always happy to be second in line."[8] Former Jane's Addiction bassist Eric Avery was also once connected to the reunion when a Polar Bear fan-site stated that Avery was joining the Smashing Pumpkins, though this statement was later retracted.[9][10]In April, Iha confirmed that he was not taking part in the reunion.[11]

Jimmy Chamberlin has called the album "magnificent", and said of the album's development that "We are moving along nicely in the studio. [Billy Corgan] pulled off a magnificent guitar symphony last night and it is still ringing in my ears this morning. Eight guitars resonating in one big harmonic handshake! And the drums...........of course!"[12]

On March 31st, 2007, Ben Lee announced[13] on his weblog that work on Zeitgeist was complete, stating thusly:

"[I] went to the Smashing Pumpkins album-wrap party and heard their awesome newie. Seriously, the heaviest and most intense thing they have ever done. Really exceptional. Sounds like the world needs a record like that right now."
