Zayra Alvarez

Zayra Enid Alvarez Dones (b. December 11, 1974 [1]) is a Puerto Rican born musician currently based in Texas.
She was born to Luis Alvarez Cruz and Ana Dones Torres and grew up in the coastal town of Arroyo. Along with her older sister Liza, she took part in talent shows and school plays. At age 14, she started playing in different bands on a quest for self-discovery. Zayra graduated high school with GPA of 4.0 and her parents strongly encouraged her to get a college degree. She continued her education at University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus. Zayra never stopped singing during her college years. In 1998 she graduated with a bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering from UPR. She decided to visit Dallas for an adventure with her best friend from home after finishing college. She landed at a job at Boeing, but after the events of 9-11 she became unemployed. She realized that life was too short and decided to take singing and composing full time. Dallas would be the place where her passion for music would be rekindled greatly. She currently lives in Richardson, Texas.
Zayra also stars in the the independent film "Lycanthrope". The movie features one of her original songs, "This Is Love", which can be found on the re-release of her album "Rueleta"
She competed on the CBS show Rockstar: Supernova in 2006, and was the eighth contestant eliminated on August 16. She was known for her controversial outfits.
