Zayandeh Rud civilization (تمدن زاینده رود) is a pre-historic era culture that were settled around Zayandeh Rud, in Iran.

The Zayandeh Rud (Zāyandé Rūd) basin is located in the central part of Iran. The area of the basin is about 42,000 km2. Isfahan province constitutes 87.7% of the Zayandeh Rud basin. In addition, rest of the basin is placed in Bakhtiyari and Yazd provinces. Isfahan is the capital of Isfahan province, which is one of the oldest cities in the world.[1]

Little is known about this civilization, but excavated artifacts by ICHO have been linked to that of Sialk and Marvdasht.[2] Preliminary archaeological research in early 2006, indicated that in one of the seven sub-basins of Zayandeh Rud known as Gaw-Khuni swamp (Gāw-Khuni, Gāvkhāneh - Kāvkhuni) in the Isfahan Province has indicated there is an ancient buried city in the vicinity of the village of Varzaneh.[3][4]

According to local folklore, there was an ancient and prosperous city near Varzeneh by the name of Kāvkhāneh or by some traditions as Sabā, which was destroyed by war and famine.[5]

A dam recently built along the river has threatened the excavation sites with permanent submergence.
