Talk:Zaporozhets

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zapor is atually a pun referring to the problems with ignition in this car. This is the first thing that comes to some peopes' mind when they have to wait for this car to start it's stalled engine, while standing behind. Gnomz007

[edit] Wait...

It went from being thought of has horrible Soviet crap to being warmly remembered. What happened? Thanx 68.39.174.150 23:51, 28 May 2005 (UTC)

The car is a very warm memory for many. I am 15 and I remember when I lived in Latvia and we had one of the later models. 45 KMH? Holly crap that was fast (going down hill ofcorse)

[edit] The Most Common Nickname

Hmm...i'm very surprised there is no mention of this here. Growing up in Russia for part of my life, i'v seen this car many times. And herd the name people used for it. There is one thats more common than possibly the cars real name, and definetly more common than any nicknames in the article. It is Zhoparozhets (Russian: жoпaрожец). Zhopa (Russian: жoпa) is a slang word meaning rear, which translates as the english word Ass. And Rozha (Russian: poжa) is a slang word for Face, which can translate as Mug. Put the two words together and you get a word which means "ass-faced" or "an item which has an ass for a face". The car was called that for several reasons. It had a rear mounted air-cooled engine, and therefore no radiator grill. This made it seem very unusual, and often you thought you were looking at the REAR of another vehicle when you saw the front of this one. Unlike other cars such as the VW Beetle, the cars front and back are both flat and boxy, so they are genuinly hard to distinguish sometimes, when looking quickly.
