[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:US postal service john wayne.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:US postal service john wayne.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. [edit] Quisha Wint
A tag has been placed on Quisha Wint, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}}
on the top of the page (below the existing db tag) and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.
For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Ohconfucius 10:22, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Image:Ctv press site Quisha Wint.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Ctv press site Quisha Wint.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{Replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Abu badali (talk) 11:01, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Anna nicole.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Anna nicole.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 21:18, 9 February 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Abu badali (talk) 21:18, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
- Apparently the page didn't save originally, with the source of the photo. If you had looked down to my edit summary, it states that the image was from a Trimspa advertisement, a point I've now elaborated on in the image description. I'm curious that you didn't complain about the original file uploaded as anna_nicole.jpg. Why is that? -- Zanimum 14:55, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
-
- I haven't complain because I haven't seen it. As soon as I reach an unsorced image, I tag it.
-
- By the way, you said on the edit summary that "No other free image has been found". Which sources do you use for searching for free images before uploading copyrighted protected material? --Abu badali (talk) 16:15, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
-
-
- Primarily Flickr's Creative Commons search, and occasionally just their general search, at which point I try and convince the person to relicense their image. -- Zanimum 16:36, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
- Haven't you noticed this one? By the way, why did you reuploaded it under a different name on commons? Why not use the same file name? --Abu badali (talk) 05:24, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

-
- Abu, here's the timeline of what happened.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- I went to the Anna Nicole Smith article, and discovered it used an image that didn't qualify for fair use, as it was a stock photo. I found the advertisement image of Anna, and uploaded it as fair use. Minutes later, I searched Flickr for original images of Smith. I found the red carpet image. I contacted the creator of the image, and asked his permission to relicense it as CC-BY. I log off the computer. You come to my talk page, warn me that I need fair use rationale. Another admin deletes the image entirely.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- I log on to the computer again, find out that the rationale I typed in didn't save properly, and see the image is deleted. I restore the image, and quickly re-write fair use rationale for the image. I then re-add the image to the article.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- I then go to Flickr, find out that the photographer has agreed to release his image under a free license. I upload the image to Wikimedia Commons, and then use that image of Wikipedia.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Why wouldn't I change the file name? When I saved the Flickr image to my system, it's name was a series of random letters and numbers. I changed it so that the name would be unique and descriptive. I still link to the original image, to credit the source. -- Zanimum 14:44, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
- Kudos to you for contacting the photographer asking him to release the image under a free licensing. When I asked about changing the name, that was because you had uploaded the same image as Image:Anna Nicole Smith MTV Music Awards 2005 crop.jpg (in commons, now deleted) when the better named Image:Anna Nicole Smith.jpg was already available. But this is no big deal now.
- But the point is, why did you rush up to upload an unfree image and even state in the rationale that "No free equivalent could be found" if you were still in the works of acquiring a free image? Can't an article stay some days without an image? and Does "No free equivalent could be found" means "So far, I haven't found one, although I have a good chance to do"?
- Again kudos for contacting the photographer and asking him for the image. There should be a barnstar specially for this kind of thing. --Abu badali (talk) 18:22, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

- Well, it was a case that if I had just deleted the existing image, and didn't find a replacement, then dozens of other people may have uploaded their own random images, claiming fair use. Having a less than perfect placeholder satisfied other Wikipedians in the interim. -- Zanimum 18:43, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Dr. Seuss
Awhile back you deleted a section on the Dr. Seuss, concerning the Seuss Celebration DVD. Your reason for doing so was you considered the info unimportant. Aren't mentions of VHS/DVD releases usually considered within the rules? Just because you personally consider info unimportant doesn't make deleting it ok. If it's spamming or a rumor then it's a different story. 71.115.236.185 05:52, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
- It would be much better to have this as a seperate article on the DVD. While this DVD is important, in that it's the complete first release of this collection, it's not terribly important in the overall story of his life. Please feel free to create a seperate article with this text. -- Zanimum 14:51, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cosplay images licenses
Zanimum, could you take a look at images Image:Ska naru lounge.jpg and Image:Ska naru leotard shiny.jpg. You say we have permission to use them from "the webmaster", but you tagged these images with a free creative commons license. Are you sure these "webmasters" really released these images under the terms of said license or did they just give permission for the image to be used on Wikipedia?
If they really released under a free license, could you edit the image's description pages to include verifiable information on that, like an otrs number or a website where they author state they're releasing those images?
Also, image Image:Digimon_mimi_kigurumi.jpg was posted to commons with the only source info being a link back to Wikipedia. Can you fix that?
Thanks, --Abu badali (talk) 12:24, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, did you have the time to take a look at those? --Abu badali (talk) 16:16, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
- I've removed the unverifiable licenses tags. --Abu badali (talk) 06:37, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Your Name in Greek
Zanimum, you state on your user page that your name in greek means "νικοτίνη περισσότερο". As I am of greek ethnicity, I have to tell you that the proper grammar is "περισσότερη νικοτίνη". If you wrote it the other way deliberately, I apologise. By the way, I don't mean to offend; I just want to corect this (minor, actually) inaccuracy. Please don't take this the wrong way.--Orthologist 20:54, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
- I'm definitely not going to take this the wrong way, this is cool! I never thought anyone would see/comment on that. I don't speak Greek, so I didn't know what was what. At some point my name was in a press release or something that was translated into Greek. I thought it was cool, pasted it on my user page. Thanks so much for letting me know how it's actually supposed to be spelled. -- Zanimum 15:56, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Inupiaq wiki
Hi, I've been working with the Inupiaq wiki for the past 2 days as an anonymous user. I noticed the featured article, Iqsrabutilik (Canadian Geese), doesn't seem to have Inupiaq writing, although I've only relyed on translation. I can tell written language styles from others, and it does not seem like Inupiaq. I wouldn't know how to find out what it is. Don't worry, I'm not making it a big concern. If you can write back that would be nice. SKREAM 01:47, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Rollback on Sesame Street Live
Hi! You rolled me back on Sesame Street Live. I thought I was reverting the same fairly meaningless edits that this user inserts from time to time. I'm going to go back and make the edits without using rollback. I don't really see how one random date and location from a multi-year tour of a show is meaningful in this article. Please let me know if you feel otherwise. kmccoy (talk) 03:37, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
- As far as I know, those were the first date and locations of the first production for each show, where the tour started off. -- Zanimum 14:28, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
- The information is incorrect. The tours start off in the late summer/early fall, and I've never known one to start at the Fox in Detroit. Many of them are built and rehearsed (sometimes with a dress rehearsal for invited public), and on the first year of its rotation, usually open in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, I think. There's a multi-year cycle that the tours go through, with small alterations from year to year. kmccoy (talk) 01:00, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
[edit] AfD nomination of Cherokee Wikipedia
An editor has nominated Cherokee Wikipedia, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not"). Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Articles on invidiual Wikipedia language editions and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. [edit] Your recent vote at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/2006 Gemini Awards
I don't usually contact editors about their votes, but I took offense at your suggestion that my nomination of this article for deletion had some anti-Canadian bias. I am Canadian. And if there was a comparably ridiculous article relating to the Emmy Awards, I would nominate it for deletion. (In fact, I recently nominated several Golden Globe categories for deletion.) Did you even look at the article in question? If you re-visit the discussion page, you'll see that another user has added a comment to clarify your mistaken impression of why the article was nominated for deletion. With all due respect, perhaps next time you vote on something, you can do your homework and avoid insinuating ill-intentions on the part of the nominee. Just a thought. --Vbd (talk) 15:46, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
Aha. It occurred to me after I left the above message that I should check the article history. Lo and behold, you are its author. I apologize if you took my Afd as a personal affront on your contribution. However, the article does not fit into the existing structure for the Gemini Awards in terms of categories and articles. Moreover, it is merely a list of nominees for one particular award. Lists of nominees are not generally considered notable -- even for Emmy Awards -- and this particular list is for a popularity contest vote! It doesn't even include the winner. Again, I understand that you may feel some personal attachment to the article, but I still don't think it passes the "what WP is not" criteria.--Vbd (talk) 15:56, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Requests for article updates on the help desk
Hi. I thought you might want to know that some requests for updates in articles about organizations are now coming from IP addresses, and while some of them include email and phone numbers, it's been custom to delete such info, and I'm not sure how we should verify what's given to us, especially in cases where the subjects in question do not show up in web searches. What's your take on that? Thanks. Xiner (talk, email) 03:09, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry, didn't see this until today. IP addresses are okay, I think. Deleting phone numbers and emails is fine. By "the subjects", you mean you can't find references to the verify the people trying to correct the information are indeed with the company?
- How many people have sent corrections, to your estimation? Have most been understanding and understandable, or furious and confusing? -- Zanimum 18:09, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
-
- Yes, most are courteous in their requests. What I meant by "subject" is both the identity of the poster and the information they are requesting to be placed into articles. It's even more troublesome if neither their claim nor the article's is sourced.
-
-
- Good to hear they're courteous, certainly not always the case on OTRS. That is a troubling point, I agree. I'll take it towards the Wikimedia Foundation Communications Committee, see what we can brainstorm. -- Zanimum 18:52, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your article Big Bird in China
Your article Big Bird in China has been proposed for deletion "Wikipedia:No original research & does NOT include Wikipedia:Reliable sources for WP:Verifiability of content." Please add references, or it will be deleted.--Parker007 07:35, 2 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Zanimum - I came across the notice on Big Bird in China and I've been trying to find various sources. I've got a several links, but don't know how include them since I'm not sure what items should be cited. I'm getting Spinney's book this evening and so I should be able to at least cite the one on the writing credit with Jim Slone. If you want me to put the links here so you can check them and apply as you think fit, let me know. Thanks. --EarthPerson 20:20, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hamilton Southeastern Schools
Am I doing something wrong in adding school pages under Hamilton Southeastern Schools? My students wrote articles for a project and I wanted to publish them.
- We have a policy that all information must be cited to verifiable sources. (Wikipedia:Citing sources) Does the school board publish information on how many rooms are in each schools, and the demographics of the students? -- Zanimum 18:59, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Thats a template called {{badbio}}. I saw someone else using it a while ago, and have been finding it very useful, epsecially in those cases were new users create autobiographical pages by mistake. Cheers Danski14 19:41, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] IC University
I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article IC University, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}}
notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. [edit] Listifying
Thanks for the constructive and sensible suggestion. While RobotG is "very experienced" at deleting categories, it is still learning how best to turn those deleted categories into lists, so all suggestions are welcome! I will investigate the possibility of making it capable of creating a subsection in a relevant article; sometimes it will probably be more appropriate to create the list! (The motivation behind getting the bot to do this is the huge backlog at Category:Categories to be listified then deleted.) Thanks for your interest. Best wishes, --RobertG ♬ talk 14:51, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, in the mean time I've been renaming a lot of them as Crew of ___, so that it encourages other entries. Would that be easier to reprogram? -- Zanimum 14:54, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think "Crew of _____" is very good wording. You then end up with things like "Crew of Star Trek," which means something very different. CovenantD 18:37, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
- That would be Crew of the USS Enterprise. Other than Firefly, I can't think of any show where the name of the featured vessel would be the same as the title. -- Zanimum 18:47, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

- Semantics - many readers wouldn't make the distinction. Say "crew of Star Trek" and Kirk, McCoy and Spock come to mind. The point is, "crew" is too vague a term in this context. "Production crew" might work, but it still removes the word list from the title which is all these are. CovenantD 18:55, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Arbitration re: Abu badali
Hi. I am writing you because you were one of the respondants on the RfC about Abu badali that was started back in November. There has been no substantive comment there for over a month and User:Abu badali has never bothered to respond to the RfC. The last comment on the talk page of the RfC was a suggestion to take it to arbitration, which is what I propose we do. Accordingly, I have created a shell/draft listing to add to the list of Arbitration Committee matters here. I've listed your new there, preliminarily, as a complaintant. If you are not interested in participating, please remove your name. If you are, please add your comments as we must prepare a 500 word summary of the case. [edit] Just wondering
Why did you indef block an IP? [1] it only has one contrib [2] Betacommand (talk • contribs • Bot) 19:10, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
- I've changed the block to three months. While the vandalism itself is not at the level that I'd normally give more than a warning, it caused an entire town in my province to freak out. I'm doing this in my attempt to woo the media and mayor of the town to encourage citizens to collaborate on the Sioux Lookout, Ontario article, and build it up as a community. -- Zanimum 13:28, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
-
- Blocks are not punitive, they're preventative. Your description sounds as if you've performed a block to 'punish' the IP user. Additionally, as it's an anonymous IP, it's very, very unlikely that the person who made the edit is still assigned to that address, so you're probably causing collateral damage. Finally, a long block because of the reaction is improper. The vandalism was fairly standard stuff, nothing illegal or particularly bad as far as some of the stuff we've seen in the past. Please use your tools in a level headed manner and don't let other people's panic set the scale of your response. - CHAIRBOY (☎) 13:37, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

- I see you've edited since I left the above message, but the block hasn't been shortened yet. Just a quick heads up that if I don't hear from you, I'll be shortening the block myself in just a little bit. I'd like to avoid stepping on your toes, but the block length is excessive for an IP (plus the other concerns I shared above). Regards, - CHAIRBOY (☎) 14:35, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

- Could you clarify whether you understand why your block was a problem? I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but your response above is less than encouraging. We've got a responsibility to use our bit wisely, and I'm concerned that you may not be following the letter or spirit of the block policy. If that's so, we can work together to clear up any misconceptions. - CHAIRBOY (☎) 14:47, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Own block
I've seen some admins misusing the "tools" lately, but this is the first time I see one really shot his own foot. :) --Abu badali (talk) 20:42, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the unblock. -- Zanimum 13:24, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
- That wasn't me! Yamla unblocked you. It's funny how common it is for people to believe that I'm an admin. --Abu badali (talk) 16:57, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Can I apply to become an admin on the Inupiaq Wikipedia?
On the Inupiaq Wiki, I've made many of the last contributions, mostly anonymous, but some with my account, as you can see on the recent edits. When I first visited there accidentally, there were only 10 articles. With my help both anonymous and with my account, that number has gone up to 18. I've improved the quality of a few, and have made some articles. While on the Akutuq page, I noticed that you commented saying that anybody that makes productive edits is welcome. My account name is EnglishItalianoNihongoRusski, so on there, you can contact me.
P.S. Sorry for the long message.71.125.32.56 19:45, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

- I don't actually know enough of the language to actually say that I speak it, but I do have a basic knowledge of the language, enough to make contributions, although I've found Inuit grammar slightly confusing. I am a good speller in Inupiaq. To answer your question aboutwhere I live, I've lived in New York...City my entire life. 71.125.32.56 20:57, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Sinbad
Gracias and mahalo for adding the references to the Sinbad article. Maybe one of these days I'll get to be an administrator... :-) Thanks again. --Ali'i 18:41, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Forest Whitaker photo
You deleted a press photo from the infobox. From your edit summary, I take it that the fact that the character is discussed in the body of the article (and is listed as a notable role in the infobox) doesn't count? I know "fair use" is construed narrowly, but your interpretation seems excessive.--Vbd (talk) 21:24, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Shoppers World
I'm not sure why I deleted that, perhaps because it was not verified? BTW, in case you are unaware, I am Osgoodelawyer. Lexicon (talk) 17:05, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sinbad Peer review
I left a couple of pointers in the peer review for your article. I hope it helps—I'm not much of a biography writer, I'd suggest talking to User:RadioKirk, who brought Lindsay Lohan up to featured status. He'll probably know more about writing articles about hollywood icons. The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 03:40, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks! When I came across the story at the Marist site I knew not only did I have to use it, it was a sure bet for DYK. Daniel Case 16:08, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost
Thanks for volunteering to help with the Signpost. You expressed interest in helping with the In the news column. One place to start is with Wikipedia:Press coverage; however, that page does not cover everything. You'll also want to use a service such as Google or Yahoo News- search for "Wikipedia" or "Wikimedia", and look specifically for articles that mention Wikipedia directly (not just using us as a source for a piece of trivia). Many other users have expressed an interest in helping with In the news; I've set up a sandbox page for all contributors to help out on here: Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Newsroom/Other/ITN. Feel free to help out; I expect that this column will be a collaborative effort. You can work on this all throughout the week; your final work should be finished by Monday at about 17:00 UTC.
If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thanks again for volunteering.
I'm aware, by the way, that you know most of this, but I'm too lazy to write one specifically for you :) Ral315 » 05:02, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Sesame Street Birthdays
I must commend you on your work on the Sesame St. and related articles. I feel it has had a huge impact on society and is worth documenting. Just wondering however, if you could share your sources for the original Sesame Street character birthdays article. Its a minor point, but I noticed Oscars birthday was changed without explanation. I'm wondering which is correct, and where these dates came from initially.
