[edit] Image:Friedspiders.jpg
Hi, I appreciate you unploading the image but I'm concerned you might be missing one of the subtler points of copyright: in the U.S., a restrictive copyright is the default. Even if no copyright is claimed, it still exists. We can only use images that someone has explicitly made "free" (GFDL, public domain, no-rights-reserved, or similar). Looking at the site you got the image from I see no indication that is the case. Is that correct? —Bunchofgrapes (talk) 23:18, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
- I was under the impression that uploading to a copyright free distribution site was the same as releasing to public domain. Maybe I am wrong, but who makes money off of Wikipedia? Zena Dhark…·°º•ø®@» 23:29, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
- By "copyright free", do you mean they display no copyright notice? Makes no difference as I said... the copyright holder of the work retains full copyright, at least under current U.S. law, which is the one Wikipedia is most worried about, as its servers reside in the U.S. Your second question -- who makes money off of Wikipedia? -- seems irrelevant to the copyright issue here, but it is important to note that Wikipedia also doesn't accept images with "no commercial use" licenses of any kind. Why? One of the fundamental goals is to create a library of free (that's free-as-in-speech, not free-as-in-beer) content, completely reusable under any circumstance. Certain exceptions are make for fair-use images, but that's about it. And, in fact, lots of people try to make money off of Wikipedia -- there are a ton of perfectly legitimate "mirror" sites that support themselves with ad revenue.
-
- Anyway, I'm going to delete Image:Friedspiders.jpg as a copyvio; if I've misunderstood something here, it can be undeleted. I caution you to never upload an image that doesn't explicitly state a free copyright, and I strongly caution you to never, ever make assumptions about the copyright status of an image and apply what you only think is the right tag. If you have any older uploads of a similat nature, you should go through and remove their copyright tags (and preferably tag them with {{db-self}} as well).
-
- Sorry to play the bad cop :-( These kind of issues are just taken very seriously around here. —Bunchofgrapes (talk) 01:39, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
No Problem. I just do what I can to help the cause. Zena Dhark…·°º•ø®@» 05:30, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- Unfortunately the statement on Flickr here that "this photo is public" isn't a copyright statement but just means that that photo is visible on the site to all comers. The actual copyright status is at the image page, and it's "all rights reserved." —Bunchofgrapes (talk) 16:23, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- Maybe Wikipedia should move their servers. I resign to disambiguation and mergers. Go ahead and delete/ban/do what it is you admins do. Zena Dhark…·°º•ø®@» 16:30, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sidebar redesign final vote!
It's that special, special time! No, grandma's not coming over. No, not time to clean out the fridge. It's sidebar redesign voting time! Yes, the community has narrowed it down to 3 different options, and a vote for the same old original sidebar is a choice one could vote for as well. Voting for multiple options is allowed, and discussion on the whole shebang is right there on the vote page itself.
You're probably getting this message because the sidebar fairy (JoeSmack for now) noticed you commented on the project at some time over on at Wikipedia talk:Village pump (proposals)/Sidebar redesign. Lovely. JoeSmack Talk 06:27, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Casale_Media.gif
Thanks for uploading Image:Casale_Media.gif. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:

[edit] License tagging for Image:Greencali.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Greencali.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 05:06, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:CallMe-HeidiFleiss.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:CallMe-HeidiFleiss.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. [edit] Helping out with the Unassessed Wikipedia Biographies
Seeing that you are an active member of the WikiBiography Project, I was wondering if you would help lend a hand in helping us clear out the amount of [unassessed articles] tagged with {{WPBiography}}. Many of them are of stub and start class, but a few are of B or A caliber. Getting a simple assessment rating can help us start moving many of these biographies to a higher quality article.
