Zaltbommel was first mentioned as "Bomela" in the year 850. In 1231 Zaltbommel received City rights, which were renewed in 1316.

The actual Municipality Zaltbommel was created on the 1st of January 1999, by a merge of the communities Brakel, Kerkwijk and Zaltbommel.Zaltbommel is situated in he heart of the Netherlands, next to the A2 Highway, railways and the rivers Waal and Maas. This makes Zaltbommel a good area to work and live in.

The City of Zaltbommel, consists of 13 Population Centres and counted 26.195 inhabitants on the 1st of January 2007, an increase of 10 compared to 2006.
