[edit] Private Life and Background
Zain spent two years on the beat in Stoke Newington before joining SO13, Covert Operations. Exceptional and specialising in undercover work, Zain was extremely driven and ambitious, and preferred thinking with his head. Zain was a second generation British Muslim. He had an estranged relationship with his parents, Rafi and Carmen. Zain's sister died years ago from a drugs overdose, although Zain told Kristen Shaw that she was killed in a car crash, in order to retain his cover. He has frequently stated that his dead sister, Jessica, was the reason he became a cop.
[edit] "Adi Mateen"
When Supt. Okaro launched Operation Mercury on the Cole Lane Estate in March 2005, an operation focusing on targeting drug crime, PC Lance Powell identified a suspected drug dealer known as Adi Mateen. Desperate to catch Mateen, Lance kept a close eye on him, which lead to him witnessing a drug dealing taking place between Mateen and the Superintendent. When Okaro didn't turn in the drugs to custody, Powell began to suspect that his own Superintendent could be corrupt. He didn't have much time to mull it over however before him and Mateen were confronted by teenager Jordan Tomlin, whom was armed with a gun. At that moment, Mateen revealed himself as an undercover policeman, DC Zain Nadir, working to infiltrate a big-time drug baron. Zain was able to convince Jordan not to use the gun, and he was arrested shortly after fleeing the scene. Zain continued with his undercover operation and was almost gunned down, unaware of the fact that in the short time he disappeared Tomlin had tipped off the drug baron about him being a copper.
[edit] Sun Hill and Beyond
Shortly afterwards, Zain decided to accept an offer from DCI Jack Meadows to take up residency in Sun Hill CID. While not straight down the line corrupt, Zain was known to bend the rules and distort the truth to benefit himself on more than one occasion. Meadows realised he needed to be tamed if he was to be kept in CID, and he intended on keeping a close eye on him. Zain's experience on the streets means he was constantly slipping back into undercover mode, and he found his habit of making up stories from his past a tough one to break.
When friend and colleague Sgt. Smith engaged in an affair with the wife of a notorious crime boss, Zain attempted to warn him off, however unsuccessfully. When the woman was struck down by a car, Smithy was framed by the crime boss, and Zain became obsessed with finding the evidence to prove his innocence, which involved mainly leaning on what he was convinced was a planted witness.
Zain is often considered courageous but reckless, always sailing close to the edge. In the second live episode, in which Sun Hill station was under siege, Zain went against all protocool and risked his life by speeding across the road from the station in a car along with DS Phil Hunter as a guman fired shots at them.
[edit] Zain's Downfall
In June 2006, Zain went on an undercover operation, posing as a corrupt officer to investigate a case of money laundering at a nightclub involving Kristen Shaw, owner and a suspected drugs baron. As Zain dug for information on Kristen Shaw and her associates and suppliers, he gradually found himself falling in love with his target. He was seen as an ambiguous character for some time during this undercover stint, as many viewers didn't know if he was deep undercover, or had really turned corrupt. Later in the year, a drugs mule named Eva Garcia was found badly beaten by Sun Hill police - it transpired that she was left for dead by Colombian drug dealers who were supplying drugs to Kristen Shaw. Zain was ordered by his superiors to put out the word to Kristen Shaw that Eva had died, as Eva eventually made a full recovery in hospital by January 2007. She was left in the care of PC Honey Harman in a safe house, unbeknowst to Kristen Shaw and her associates that she was still alive and prepared to give evidence.
Zain by this time had 'turned native' and was feeding false information to his superiors and officers from the Serious and Organised Crime Agency. The Sun Hill team were preparing to foil a major drugs deal between Kristen Shaw and the Colombians at a false location, and Zain snuck off to Kristen's bar and updated Kristen and her business partner, Paul Haskew, on the team's movements. Honey and Eva were spending their second day in the safe house when Eva's brother, Santi, was discovered by Colombian drugs lord José Alvarez in Sun Hill. They enticed Eva from the safe house by posing as her brother, and as soon as Honey managed to locate Eva, they were both ambushed and kidnapped by Alvarez.
An unknowing Zain was briskly taken away to a warehouse by Kristen and Paul Haskew as word spread that Eva Garcia was alive and well, and were later joined by Alvarez along with Honey and Eva. Alvarez became frustrated when Zain kept lying about his cover and then shot Eva in the stomach. Zain was then forced to reveal the truth about his undercover status to a furious Paul Haskew and a hurt Kristen when Alvarez held Honey at gunpoint. Honey was tied up and gagged and held captive along with Zain as they were taken to the drugs exchange point at Bonham Wharf. During the journey, Zain revealed to a shocked and frightened Honey that he was in love with Kristen, but promised to protect her.
In order to win back Kristen, Zain phoned DCI Jack Meadows and spoke about the dummy location. Zain told Kristen that he had started out trying to get her sent down, but changed his mind once he'd fallen in love with her, and assured her he really was corrupt, so Haskew asked Zain to shoot Honey to prove his loyalty to them. Zain refused, and when Paul went to do it himself, Zain ran after him, and forced the weapon from his hand, before turning it on Paul himself. He tried to pull the trigger, but there were no bullets inside. Asking him to shoot her had just been a test of loyalty, and Zain had failed. Zain was beaten unconscious and tied up by Haskew.
Honey taunted Haskew about Kristen's loyalty to Zain and persuaded him to put the batteries back in Zain's phone to check his text messages. Zain eventually managed to convince Kristen to untie him, and then leave together when it became evident the police had picked up the trace and were on their way to Bonham Wharf. Zain went back to untie Honey, and took her with him and Kristen when they escaped to a nearby bridge. The police had arrived by this time and a shootout ensued between Haskew and CO19 as the deal was about to go down. Zain told Honey to stay and wait for the approaching police while he and Kristen left, intending to leave the country with Kristen's share of the drug's money. However, Honey pleaded with Zain not to go, telling him he wasn't like the rest of them, and he actually seemed to hesitate for a moment. Kristen grew impatient, pulled a gun and a struggle ensued between her and Honey, in which Honey was shot and instantly killed. When it became clear that revival was impossible, Zain told Kristen to run, that he'd find her later, and proceeded to wrap Honey's body in tarpaulin, dumping her in the river.
He had fully intended to escape with Kristen after this point, but was then found by the police, and had to resume his 'undercover' status, lying to everyone, saying that he hadn't seen Honey at the raid at all, and denied ever being on the bridge.
After a week of lies, Zain and Kristen were able to escape the country, just as evidence of Zain's lying became evident. Zain and Kristen would have escaped before the police found them if it had not been for Zain's conscience. He remained on the jetty when Kristen got onto the boat, telling her to run, but that he had to pay for what he did. When he refused to get on the boat with him, she pulled her gun on him, promising him she would shoot if he didn't. Zain had previously removed the bullets, to prevent her shooting anyone else, so he held no fear for his own safety. Zain and Kristen were both in tears by the end of the exchange, and Zain, who saw the approaching police, signalled to them to stay back, and made a full confession. Kristen pulled the trigger, but obviously, it didn't fire. Zain held Kristen until the police arrested them both.
In his last scene on The Bill, Zain told Jack he was sorry he'd let him and DS Phil Hunter down, and that Phil was the best friend he'd had in a long time.
