ZABBIX is open source software created by Alexei Vladishev. It is designed to monitor and track the status of various network services, servers, and other network hardware.
It uses MySQL, PostgreSQL or Oracle to store data. Its web based frontend is written in PHP. ZABBIX offers several monitoring options. Simple checks can verify the availability and responsiveness of standard services such as SMTP or HTTP without installing any software on the monitored host. A ZABBIX agent can also be installed on UNIX and Windows hosts to monitor statistics such as CPU load, network utilization, disk space, etc. As an alternative to installing an agent on hosts, ZABBIX includes support for monitoring via SNMP.
ZABBIX is licensed under the GNU General Public License Version 2 as published by the Free Software Foundation.
[edit] Competitive Analysis
ZABBIX is fully configurable from its web frontend. As such, it can be considered easier to use than the popular Nagios whose configuration is done through several text files. ZABBIX also combines monitoring and trending functionality whereas Nagios focuses solely on monitoring. However, ZABBIX does not yet have the same scalability or breadth of monitoring options of its more mature cousin.
Nagios has a large plugins library allowing it to monitor a wider range of devices and services. With a few modifications to their source code, Nagios plugins can be used with ZABBIX through the UserParameter option.
