[edit] Career

Gaxiola became one of the 5 finalists of the fourth generation of the popular Mexican reality singing show La Academia. She lost in the end to Erasmo Catarino, a school teacher of indigenous ethnicity. Although she won second place, she has eclipsed the first place winner by far, not only by outselling his CD by over 650,000,(700,000) but also by the way the crowd responded in their tour concerts, Most of the places well received her, but in few venues the support for Erasmo was evident that both of them seem to be the only two favorites. This phenomenon is very similar to Clay Aiken's accomplishment in the second season of American Idol.

Only 20, Yuridia has become one of the highest selling artists in Mexico. Her debut album (consisting of songs that she interpreted during the contest) has reached the diamond selling category (for over 5,00,000 copies sold In Mexico 500,000 copies is only needed to achieve diamond), a feat only achieved in the last 10 years by solo artist Luis Miguel. Not only has she become the highest selling artist to come out of the reality-TV talent show, but her powerful strong chest and head voice, along with her wide mezzosoprano vocal range, have earned her the nickname Voz de un Ángel (Voice of an Angel). Which leads to her debut album's title La Voz de un Ángel. Angel, a cover version of Robbie Williams' Angels, was the first single from the album. The song reached the top spot on the Mexican charts and reached the top 10 in Latin America.

Yuridia caused some controversy while a contestant on another reality show Desafio de Estrellas. She stormed off the stage after one of the show's judges chided her for mimicking one of the other contestants. In her defense, she said she was just singing along with the song because it was one of her favorites. Videotape from the program does not appear to show her making fun of the contestant in question. A gossip show, Ventaneando, later found a video clip where she was singing the same song during a break on La Academia's concert tour — thus proving her statement that it was indeed one of her favorites. She eventually left the contest altogether after her boyfriend Edgar was voted off.

On December 5, 2006 Sony BMG, released Yuridia's sophomore Album, titled Habla El Corazón, as well as the first single Como Yo Nadie Te Ha Amado (Spanish version of Bon Jovi's "This Ain't A Love Song"). The album includes Spanish covers of well-known songs from artists such as Bonnie Tyler and the The Police. To the date, both the album and the single are Yuridia's most successful in the United States. The album debuted at 15, while the single has peaked in the at 18.
