Ystrad Mynach is a town in the county borough of Caerphilly, traditional county of Glamorgan, south Wales, 5 miles north of Caerphilly town. It has a population of around 10,000 and stands in the Rhymney Valley.

In the Welsh language, ystrad is a wide flat bottomed valley and mynach means monk.

The town houses a number of council offices, as well as Ystrad Mynach College, a further education college established in 1959 to provide training for local coal miners and now claiming a roster of over 12,000 students.

The nearby Penallta Colliery was the last to close in the valley. Other notable buildings are the Ystrad Mynach railway station, opened in 1890, a community hospital, a number of schools, and the Beech Tree, Coopers Arms and Royal Oak pubs.

From 1927 to 1996 Ystrad Mynach hosted the 'F' division headquarters of Glamorgan Constabulary (from 1968, South Wales Police).

Ystard Mynach railway station was a location for one of Ronnie Barker's Porridge episodes.

Records show that Ystrad Mynach railway station was in existence in 1857.

Penallta Rugby Football Club is based in Ystrad Mynach. The Rugby Club was inaugarated by a group of miners from Penallta colliery in 1952 and moved from a number of different social addresses until it settled at Ystrad Fawr, hosting both its club and playing ground there.

Penallta became a full WRU Club in 2004 and since then it has won Divisions 4 and 5 South East, plus the coveted Silver Ball trophy in 2005. They are currently League Leaders in Division 3 East.

Penallta also won the Worthington Welsh 'Brewers' Cup in 2001. The only time the club won the cup in its junior union history.

Mike Voyle, a resident of Ystrad Mynach, is the only Penallta player to have represented Wales. He won 21 caps as a tight forward between 1997 and 2001.

Penallta's most capped player is Lee Acreman, with over 600 appearances for the Club.
