YS Origin takes place 700 years before the events portrayed in YS I. This game is a prequel and is considered a milestone among fans of the series since it is the first game not starring Adol, the player character of the Ys series. The game also adds replayability with the availability of two different player characters, together with a third character who is made available after the game is completed.

[edit] About the game

Taking place 700 years before the events of Ys I, this game tells the story of the purpose of Darm Tower, and the demons' attempts to bring Ys back to the ground. It is a landmark in the series by virtue of the fact that Adol Christin is no longer the main character. Instead, there are two new characters: Yunica Toba and Hugo Fact. Both are player characters, and the storyline plays differently for each, though they travel through the same locations.

[edit] Gameplay & Characters

The gameplay has undergone significant expansion since The Oath in Felghana. Yunica is a knight-in-training, and early footage suggests she will play much like Adol, focusing on close-quarters combat. Hugo, on the other hand, is a powerful sorceror, and specializes in ranged attacks. True to Falcom's claims, the game is somewhat easier for him, because of his ranged abilities.

Furthermore, once the player has completed the game with both characters, a third becomes available, known as "The Claw." He is a villain one meets in the course of the game, and he has a story all his own to play through, with some rather radical adjustments from the other two. In a series not typically known for its replayability, this is a rather remarkable step forward.

The game was released on December 21st of 2006, to mixed reactions from fans. The game is quite limited in scope, taking place entirely within the confines of Darm Tower itself. However, the actual area traveled is quite large. It is, at its core, something of a dungeon-crawler game, as one never enters a town. Rather, one purchases upgrades and bonuses at the save points throughout.

More so than any previous game in the series, the game is heavily story-oriented. Since none of the characters are of the "silent protagonist" mold that Adol typically fits into, there is significantly more dialogue and character development. Overall, it is a fine entry in the series, though non-Japanese speakers are likely to find it far less interesting than the other games, until an English patch is released.
