"You Were Meant for Me" is a folk pop song written by Jewel and Steve Poltz and performed by Jewel on her first album Pieces of You. It was the second single from that album and went on to receive a lot of recognition. It became a hit and reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Jewel also holds the record in the Guinness Book of World Records for longest chart run of a single for "You Were Meant For Me" (radio edit) /"Foolish Games".

[edit] About the record

"You Were Meant For Me" was Jewel's second single to be taken from her debut album. The single was altered from the album version and re-recorded for a more radio friendly version. A verse was deleted from the original lyrical liner. A commercial single of the song was available in the US (and internationally). The song is credited as either the, 'single edit', 'radio edit' or 'album edit'.

Two versions of "You Were Meant For Me" surfaced before its final release. Version One (aka The Sean Pean Radio Edit) was set for original release. Jewel had re-recorded the song, altered the majority of the lyrics and changed the sound to a more rock version. However after the split of the two, Jewel went back into the studio, re-recorded the version that is most famous now, and created a new music video for the song. Poltz also appeared in the video.

[edit] Other versions

The song was re-recorded by Hong Kong singer, Fiona Sit, in April 2005. The album was a success, leading to the release of a 2nd edition but the song was never promoted as a major single and acted as more of a 'bonus track' of the album.

In 2004, it was re-recorded by the Irish group Bellefire for their sophomore album, Spin the Wheel. It was used as their third single but it failed to catch public attention and ended up a flop.
