[edit] Song Information and Music Video
"You" received a release in the UK, but it was ineligible to chart. It was commercially released in Japan and features a B-Side from "The Velvet Rope" called "Accept Me". "Accept Me" was a song about a woman begging acceptance from her lover, family, and the world. The song was also released on the Every Time single. Even though "You" was never officially released in South Africa, it was able to chart on import sales. The video for the song is a live performance for Janet's Velvet Rope Tour and extra footage from the tour.
The lyrics of the song are claimed to have been written as a message to Janet's brother Michael Jackson with whom she had a conflict after they made a collaboration on the song "Scream". Especially the lines Spent most your life pretending not to be/The one you are but who you choose to see/Learned to survive in your fictitious world/Does what they think of you determine your worth? and Check in the mirror my friend are the main messages thought to have been aimed at Michael. However, Janet cleared up this rumor in an MTV interview stating that in the song she is actually singing to herself.
