[edit] YouTube and Python

Guido van Rossum, the creator and BDFL of Python programming language says that YouTube is almost entirely written in Python. http://www.digg.com/programming/YouTube_is_almost_entirely_written_in_Python

Cuong Do, Software Architect, YouTube.com says: "Python is fast enough for our site and allows us to produce maintainable features in record times, with a minimum of developers." http://www.python.org/about/quotes/ —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.51.164.50 (talk) 21:34, 28 March 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Add to famous youtube users

  • Same for Stevie Ryan. I will add soon, unless there is reasonable objection. x 19:54, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Advertising

Youtube ran considerable ads wit adbrite and they had a huge IPOD giveaway promotiont hing too. I think it was a free ipod every day and they where big advertisers with adbrite. I remember adbrite used to send out in there emails when youtube started getting a little more popular that they did heavy advertisign with adbrite.. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.174.64.142 (talk) 08:56, 12 December 2006 (UTC).

[edit] YooTube

What does anyone know about a site called YooTube. It looks the same as YouTube but with the different spelling? Tim Long 02:53, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

Don't visit these spin off sites. Many are link farms, but some may contain malware. For example, Yootube.info is highly suspicious. Some reports [1] suggest yooutube.info installs adware by using a trojan with windows media player. The homepage appears to be phishing youtube.com. When I visited (with javascript and flash turned off), the only link on the page took me to a site which was very suspicious, probably producing pop-ups and possibly worse (if I had javascript on), and probably linking to infected windows media files.
Be suspicious of everything on the internet. --h2g2bob 05:18, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] YouTube Banned In Iran

The YouTube website has been banned in Iran, information on and about this should be included, thank you. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.177.182.218 (talk) 04:31, 18 December 2006 (UTC).

[edit] Why it's bad to let people post anything

Poseidon01 21:15, 19 December 2006 (UTC) I have used you tube and have a very bad understanding of it this website just puts garbage on it like inapropreate videos that aren't even blocked. They need better protection from bad videos. Otherwise I like it for trailers and video clips. Is it true they acually sold it to google? People have been saying that all day.

Google bought Youtube a month ago. dposse 02:15, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
Yes, Google has bought them. And Youtube will continue to post copyrighted material (I have no problem with that!) and Google will take on the legal costs. The marginal benifits greatly outweigh the marginal costs.

[edit] First uploads?

The earliest date for videos I have been able to find are from user BootieChrist. April 24, 2005 is the date of the uploads. Here is a link to one of the videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebKlgRwnpFY

Of course the videos stink, but for historical perspective, it may be good to include a link to an early video. Can anyone find an older video? Alf rules 04:34, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

I found this video from user jawed (Jawed Karim, co-founder of YouTube) called "Me at the zoo" which was uploaded on April 23, 2005, and is labeled as the first video uploaded to YouTube. It is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNQXAC9IVRw

[edit] Hamilton Police Used YouTube to Identify Murderer

I just read this on page C1 of the Windsor Star (Ontario, Canada), Friday, December 22 2006, and I think it would be worth adding to the page, but because it's locked I can't. If someone with pull reads this it's probably on their website, so post it up. windsorstar.comGregor Dee 18:18, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Greg Moore

[edit] Most Subscribed

That whole Geratriac most subscribed as of August blah blah blah thing could be updated. Lonelygirl15 has almost, if not double as many subscribers as Geriatric. I'm not saying you guys at wikipedia dont do a great job; it's just a suggestion.

[edit] You tube is blocked again in Brazil

I don't know why, i was accessing you tube for 15 minutes and then was blocked again! I'll see on the TV and then I post more informations... 200.148.83.202 14:01, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Never mind it my friend. They banned it in Turkey too. Damn we are a democracy and nobody knows what the government is trying to do. You can't reach your political goals by banning websites! I have to watch Top Gear and our digital platform doesn't contain BBC 2 so I need YouTube at least for that. Deliogul 14:50, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] The photograph issue again

This is just to raise the issue again since the previous discussion was archived. If anyone lives in San Bruno near YouTube, please take a good picture of the new headquarters if you get the chance. I assume the trees have lost their leaves now so it should be easier. I am too busy myself to drive into the vicinity of YouTube, find public parking on the street in the residential neighborhood half a mile away (since YouTube picked an office park with no public parking and poor mass transit access) and walk all the way into the complex to get a good shot. Again, I strongly suspect YouTube picked its current location (the former headquarters of the Gap) specifically for privacy (which its former headquarters in the attic of the pizza parlor clearly lacked). --Coolcaesar 07:08, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your Mamas a Bitch

Nice title...from the person who seems to be having some personal issues with himself (or herself). Now could someone fix it the way it is supposed to read, like "History".

[edit] Origin of Name

Does anyone know why it's called YouTube? My little brother asked me if it was related to Senator Ted's Series of Tubes speech, and, while I know it predates that, I couldn't give him an answer and wikipedia didn't have one for me. Kingkiki217 18:26, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

I think tube refers to tv. Then why not YourTube I dunno. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 88.240.10.181 (talk) 11:04, 24 January 2007 (UTC).
YouTube was founded on the idea that its users would want to publish their own, personal videos. The intention of the title was likely to express that 'You' would be on the 'Tube.' Makes sense to me! — Zioroboco 18:11, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

there has been a GREAT deal of controversy over YouTube as a video clip sharing website. please consider adding a section showcasing where YouTube stands and where it is going. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.173.120.92 (talk) 19:36, 21 January 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Number of Favorites allowed?

Does anyone know the limit to how many favorites you're allowed? I got up to 304, then I got a message saying limit reached. Now, even though I've removed loads (I'm down to 200), it still displays the message.

Should this "limit" be mentioned on the article with a link? --rjcuk 00:14, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

I don't think so its worthless and unimportant.Lokon40 23:28, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] How long do videos remain available for?

Does anyone know what the policy is for deletion (assuming nothing contraversial)? Does it depend on the video's rating, number of viewings...? 80.42.192.187 22:08, 29 January 2007 (UTC) Andrew

[edit] A Book Trailer category for the YouTube page

There needs to be mention made of the growth of the book trailer on YouTube and perhaps also some of the common synonyms such as vidlit and litvid. There is currently a new page for this on Wikipedia named Trailer (book)

[edit] Cultural references to YouTube?

Does anyone want to start this section? I may start it myself if I find the time. Svetovid 16:08, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] YouTube Bug Leaks Passwords To Homepage

I'm trying to find another reference to "YouTube Bug Leaks Passwords To Homepage" it's an article that describes how YouTube leaked it's users passwords to the site. This is an extremely important event in YouTube history because every user appears to be affected and the ramifications of every users password, email address and full name been leaked to the Internet is huge. I tried adding this to the Wiki but you know what it's like trying to add controversial content to a Wiki. If you find another reference to this event it would be valuable to add it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 59.167.111.109 (talk) 00:36, 2 February 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Videos ending prematurely

I got fed up with this problem because I had to use Javimoya's Video Downloader on many videos just to watch it's full content! Basically, it just downloads a portion of the video, the downloading grinds to a halt then sooner or later the whole bar fills with red colour and the player shows the two buttons that allow you to share or watch the video again. It happened to me several times that I remembered that this article had some content that addressed this issue. I think it happens when YouTube's servers are overloaded or if one's internet connection is horrible or overloaded. Reloading the page with normal/forced refresh sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I've readded this issue to the technical limitations section, albeit with just enough info to be a "section stub". Some editting help is appreciated. --Bruin_rrss23 (talk) 15:13, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Viacom

As of Feb. '07, Viacom has ordered youtube to remove 100,000 videos that they own the copyright to. This is the largest number of videos requested to be taken down.

[edit] Acoustic Fingerprints

In October of '06 Youtube agreed to use filtering software to stop copyrighted music from appearing on Youtube. It's February of '07 and they still haven't done it. Viacom is forcing them to remove any vicaom videos from the site because of this.

[2] Can someone please add infomation from that news article into this article? All of the details of the deal need to be in here. I tried, but i'm not sure how to write it into the article without plagiarizing. I'm not very good at putting things into my own words. Thanks. dposse 16:01, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Section "Reports"

"To capture a YouTube video would require a camcorder and video output, and player artifacts cannot be defeated." This is completely wrong - as described in the article! Please correct this. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 217.51.229.101 (talk) 18:35, 8 February 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Clips of teachers that went "angry" at school

There were numerous reports of users uploading clips of teachers without consent, including angry teachers. For example, a user used hidden cam to show a teacher making a violent outburst because a student brought a cell phone, and he broke it. When the officials found out about this, they felt violated and had to deal with this situation. Look at LATimes.com or Google, and see for yourself. —Gh87 03:06, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] 3rd party application

There isn't currently a link to any example of a third party application for downloading Youtube videos. I would've added a link, but this page is protected. A good example is youtube-dl, a cross-platform python script(program) under the MIT license. I'm not trying to advertise for them or anything, I just use it and think it's a simple, well-written program that (perhaps) more people should know about. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 160.36.119.134 (talk) 06:06, 9 February 2007 (UTC).

A 3-rd party web-based player named Green Player is available at http://www.peabee.com/ as well as an application to generate the playlist for it. The player is skinnable and supports numerous video sources including Google Video, Revver, and direct FLV links.

[edit] Software

It would be interesting to include what OS and web-server software YouTube is using. Of course Adobe Flash video format and player is used for the video itself. DonPMitchell 19:48, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sesame Street Closings

Did you know Sesame Workshop ordered YouTube to remove all clips related to old Sesame Street closings? 66.153.65.92 15:01, 18 February 2007 (UTC)

Should YouTube really be externally linked to youtube.com as the first word of the article? Isn't it enough that it's in the External links section -- doesn't WP:EL advise against ELs in the body of the article? --Fbv65edel / ☑t / ☛c || 05:30, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] GA promotion

I am promoting this article to GA because it meets WP:WIAGA and seems to be fairly stable. Good work :) Some things that I thought might be worth working on for the push to FA:

The recent events section is broken up into too many sub-sections and interferes with the flow of the article.

The social impact section could be expanded more I feel, YouTube is referenced in popular culture all the time.

[edit] Popularity

Shouldn't its internet popularity be mentioned in the introductory paragraph with a little more than just 'it is popular'? I think that the Alexa Internet Rating should be added to it. Currently, YouTube is the fourth most popular internet site. Obviously, this fluctuates, but it is consistently ranked in the top 10, usually even the top 5. Shouldn't this be added, it is an interesting fact, and it adds credibility to the popularity claim. I think that the intro is the proper place for it. Anyone agree? By the way, the link to the statistic can be found here. Wikipediarules2221 01:06, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Violating YouTube videos againist Turkey

I added about this on the article because it's recent in Turkey. Ont 02:17, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

I don't see how that's relevant, especially since the sources used aren't in English. If it's important enough for inclusion in the article, I'm sure someone will write an English article about it. —Disavian (talk/contribs) 02:22, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

So from your point of view, if an incident is not reported in english, it is not important? Wow, talk about eurocentrism! 85.97.12.164 13:05, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

I was right, wasn't I? It's received some significant attention since then-- in English. If this were a less prominent subject, then it wouldn't be true. However, since everyone and their mom uses YouTube, mainstream press are quick to pick up stories about it. —Disavian (talk/contribs) 23:11, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Uses by the authorities

I have many different cases in which authorities have used YouTube as part of their investigation. Would this be notable enough to be added?CityPride 07:59, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

As long as it's well-written, well-referenced, and you use the proper citation templates, I think it could be a good addition to the article. —Disavian (talk/contribs) 20:16, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Well, I finallly got a decent photo of YouTube HQ

As everyone has probably noticed, I finally found an excuse to be in San Bruno on the weekend and got a decent photo of YouTube's new home on Cherry Avenue. Unfortunately it was overcast at the time. San Bruno is usually overcast and foggy, like San Francisco and the rest of the northern Peninsula. This is why San Francisco International Airport is notorious for fog delays. --Coolcaesar 13:18, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Youtube banned in Turkey

As of 06.03.2007 access to youtube is banned in Turkey. Trying to access youtube gives a "Access to www.youtube.com site has been suspended in accordance with decision no: 2007/384 dated 06.03.2007 of Istanbul First Criminal Peace Court." page. Reasoning for the ban is videos insulting Turks and Ataturk on youtube.

[edit] Scottish Insult

The word "tube" is a Scottish insult, like idiot, a-hole etc. So "You Tube" is just a fantastic name for a website if you're from Scotland! I love it!

[edit] Do Youtube employees actually care about copyright infringement?

Over 24 hours ago, I did a simple search for 'Spongebob' to see if any results would pop up, and found a video featuring several Spongebob clips. I flagged the video, I sent a mail to Youtube, 24 hours later, the video is still there. I don't understand why they can let this kind of activity slide, when a simple 'search and delete' can get rid of the copyrighted clips. I didn't have to look hard for it, I did every last thing a user could possibly do to inform Youtube that they have a copyrighted clip by Viacom on their site, yet I see no action taken towards the clip and its a day later. How can they let this slide?

Enough of my rant, but can someone answer this question: Do the employees at Youtube actually care about copyright? DietLimeCola 05:47, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

do you own the copyright to spongebob? or anything to do with the video you flagged? did you write the material? they wont remove a video because one person who is no threat to them asked for it to be removed Artynmay 21:48, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
Also, I'm not sure if this applicable in the Spongebob case, but remember that Google has deals with a number of major copyright holders so that they can legally offer copyrighted material on YouTube. Google pays a fixed fee for this right. Google makes money, the copyright holders make money (without having to incur any additional promotional or distributional costs, mind you), and the consumers win big.
However, that aside, the Talk page is for discussion about the article, not for discussion about the subject of the article. This is not a message board, heh. (And yes, I know I just broke that rule too.. I'm a hypocrite, I admit) --Jaysweet 21:52, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I just needed to know the answer to this question. Perhaps somewhere else would be a better place to discuss. DietLimeCola 22:15, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New video limit length

I have heard that YouTube is reimposing a 10 minute cap on ALL videos again, except for those of previous directors. Has anyone else heard this? Sly 23:01, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

The Thailand banning. This section should probably be removed. It seems to be a technical issue rather than an issue of censorship.

[edit] Subdomains named after airports

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but all the youtube subdomains/servers seem to have been named after airport-codes (e.g. chi, sjl ...). 82.10.181.252 13:28, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

lax, ash, and sjc are all IATA airport codes. chi seems to be an all-inclusive code for airports in Chicago. Does sjl represent the ICAO code? There's also sjl-casing. Maybe they just denote the city location of the servers. Anyway, this is all trivial and shouldn't belong in the article unless there's a source asserting significance. –Pomte 23:02, 21 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Why?

I are they taking down the music videos and things like that, we see it on tv all the time for free, so why we not see on the internet on you tube. All those people are getting free publicity so why are they complaining? Can anybody explain this? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Angel,Isaac (talkcontribs) 23:34, 29 March 2007 (UTC).

They are taking down all of the music videos because artists see it as people stealing their music. When you see it on MTV, it is because MTV had permission. On MTV, you might hear a song and then decide to go out and buy the CD. On youtube, you can just listen to it again, or possibly even take the audio from the video and burn a CD. MTV is just there to get publicity for the song. Viacom and some other conglomerates are suing youtube. If you want to watch a show, they want you to either watch it on TV or buy the series on DVD. That way, they make money. They don't care about you getting the music or show, they only care about they money they make.
