Yorkshire Wheel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Yorkshire Wheel is an observation wheel in York, built in March 2006. It is the first wheel of its kind in Yorkshire and is based on the London Eye. The wheel is 54 metres high, which is just below the height of York Minster, York's skyline height limit. The wheel has 42 pods, including a VIP pod with Glass Bottom, screen, radio, champagne fridge and leather interior.
It is located at the National Railway Museum where it was built by World Tourist Attractions who also run the Wheel of Birmingham. The wheel was originally planned to be in the Museum Gardens, however, it failed to obtain planning permission due to residents' protests.
The wheel opened to the public on April 12, 2006, following several setbacks due to bad weather. Norwich Union are the current sponsors of the wheel.
