[edit] Building

The school, which opened in 1987, was designed to look somewhat different than a typical school, and in someways more like a mall. With a canopied entranceway, sloped roofs, skylights, and ample amounts of art on the walls; the unique design (compared to previously built schools in the area), was done by award winning[1] architect Irving Boigon, and was meant to provide a more open "homelike" atmosphere for students.

[edit] Hebrew school

The school also hosts the Ateret Shalom Hebrew School, an after school program, that provides classes once or twice a week to Jewish students (who may or may not attend Yorkhill Elementary). It teaches Hebrew, holidays, traditional history and offers a Bar/Bat Mitzvah program. The Hebrew school, which serves children from junior kindergarten age through to those in grade seven is affiliated with the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto [2].
