York Outer will be a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It will elect one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.

Following its review of parliamentary representation in North Yorkshire and the City of York, the Boundary Commission for England have recommended the creation of two new constituencies for the City of York which means the abolition of both Vale of York and City of York seats.

[edit] Boundaries

York Outer will be formed from electoral wards from entirely within the city of York, namely:

  • Bishopthorpe, Derwent, Dringhouses and Woodthorpe, Fulford, Haxby and Wigginton, Heslington, Heworth Without, Huntington and New Earswick, Osbaldwick, Rural West York, Skelton, Rawcliffe and Clifton Without, Strensall, and Wheldrake.

The seat will have a 'doughnut' shape, entirely surrounding the York Central seat. The name of the seat was subject to much discussion at the Commission's public meetings, but no suitable alternative on which there was overall agreement could be found. Suggested alternatives such as "Greater York" or "County of York" were rejected as not reflecting the existence of the single Unitary Authority of York.

[edit] Election results

The seat of York Outer will be fought for the first time at the next general election (due no later than 2010). The constituency has a notional Liberal Democrat majority of 1,800.
