[edit] Photos of a 35 year old Jose Rizal, Which is Which?
[edit] CLARIFICATION
Hello Ylangylang,
Please be informed that the image you posted at the Jose Rizal Wiki page is erroneously labeled as "Rizal at 35". The photograph you posted was a studio portrait of Jose Rizal taken in Madrid 1890 when he was twenty nine years old (Please see page 276 of Prof. Ambeth Ocampo's The Centennial Countdown, ANVIL Publishing Inc. Manila 1998.
As you can see in the above photos of Dr. Rizal, the one on the right side which I posted (Fig. 2 a real photograph from the Philippine National Archive) obviously looks very much older than the one you posted (Fig.1). Anyone can see that the photo of Rizal from the Philippine National Archive shows him as looking older and more mature looking than the photo you posted (Fig.1). Therefore, the label is incorrect.
If you are not satisfied with my explanation, please visit the Philippine National Historical Society and the Philippine National Archive to see for yourself the photograph of the 35 year old Dr. Jose Rizal taken immediately prior to his execution in 1896. Likewise, please see p. 276 of The Centennial Countdown by the famous Philippine Historian, Prof. Ambeth Ocampo published by ANVIL Publishing INC, Manila, Philippines, 1998.
I will be replacing the photo you posted with the real and authentic photo of Dr. Rizal at 35 which I previously posted . Thank you for your consideration and understanding.

[edit] TRUST YOUR EYES and your INSTINCT
You wrote: If one can't trust the Jose Rizal website then one there's no one else to trust. You should send an email to their website and tell them they are wrong to claim that that photo is Rizal at 35. Ylangylang 13:42, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Authentic Photo of Dr. Rizal
You wrote:--Unfortunately, I live in the U.S. and haven't visited RP in quite a while, never been to the PNHS nor the PNA (I didnt know they exist!) so I cannot see for myself. You probably should email the website re, their mistake. Your photo however looks more like a sketch than a photograph, probaly the reason why it is not widely used. --I have only one more problem with your photos: that photo of Rizal's father - could you remove the yellow background, it kinda looks too glaring. if you could change it to black and white, that would be fine.Ylangylang 19:36, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for answering my last post. Yes I'll write the Jose Rizal Website after this X'Mass & New Year Holidays so that their mistake will be finally rectified. If they will not acknowledge their mistake then wala na akong magagawa. That Jose Rizal website is being run and managed by the Jose Rizal University. You can check the contributors of the said website who are only faculty members or teachers and students of the said University (not Researchers, Historians and Academic Scholars from the UP, La Salle, Ateneo and UST).
As you can see in the above photo, the image on the left side of your screen is a photo engraving or "sketch" of the actual photograph on the right of Dr. Jose Rizal at 35 taken immediately prior to his execution at Bagumbayan (now Luneta Park) in 1896.
One of the reason why "it is not widely used" is because the Philippine National Archive and the Philippine National Historic Society released the said photograph to the public ONLY during the Philippine Centennial Celebration in 1998. If you watched Mike de Leon's award winning 1999 Rizal movie "Bayaning Third World" you will see that photograph shown in that film.
Another main reason why the photograph above is not widely used because it shows Dr. Rizal with a short, flat nose (very Filipino), deep eyebags and a receeding hairline or pango, losyang at nakakalbo na sya. Compared to his other "widely used" photos, which I believed were tampered with or "glamourized" in order to make him appear more handsome and to overly emphasized Dr. Rizal's Chinese-mestizo descent (this they did by retouching the original shape of his "Malayan" nose), the photo above looks very native-Filipino (i.e., pango ang ilong).
I remember during our graduation day in Highschool and College, not long time ago, the photographers at Photo Studios would usually retouch or nire-retoke big and flat noses, remove skin blemishes, pimples etc. so that the portraits would look mukhang artista or movie artist.
As for the "glaring" photograph of Don Francisco, Rizal's father, I already removed it and replaced it with the photo below. I hope this one is acceptable. Its from a 1909 book Buhay at Mga Ginawa ni Dr. Jose Rizal by P. Poblete.
If ever you will return to the Philippines don't miss the opportunity to visit the Gallery and Museum at the Philippine National Historic Society where you can see authentic photographs, rare paintings, memorabilias etc. of famous Filipino heroes.
