Yishun Junior College (abbreviated YJC) is one of the 17 junior colleges in Singapore, and offers two-year pre-university programmes for students who graduate from secondary schools after the General Certificate of Education ‘Ordinary’ Level Examination. The two-year programme prepares students for education in local or foreign universities. Yishun junior College is a value-added college as it has received the value-added silver award for 2005. It is also the top-ten junior college for 2005.
Unlike other junior colleges in Singapore which offer fixed subject combinations, YJC offers students the option to read the subjects that they excel in and are interested in; that is to say, there is tremendous flexibility given to students in their choice of ‘Advance’ level subjects. This practice stems from the belief that students should take ownership of their own education; it is thus fundamental that they must choose the subjects that they want to major in.
Aligned with the principles of holistic education, all YJC students are encouraged to be active participants in co-curricular activities, community involvement programmes (CIP) as well as leadership development programmes that emphasise values inculcation. As far as possible, all students, within their two-year stint with the college, will experience, besides their ‘A’ level studies, an adventure camp, an overseas immersion programme or service-learning CIP, and a work attachment stint with a local or foreign company. YJC has also worked collaboratively with the university of Canberra to award scholarships for YJCians who have excelled both academically and in their CCAs.
Representation of the college crest: The torch represents the college vision, mission and core values. The stylised Lion represents the qualities of the students: courageous and strong in the face of adversity. The open book is a constant reminder that Yishun Junior College is a centre of academic excellence. The laurel leaves are a symbol of victory in competition and success in all endeavors. Our Mission: To nurture creative, life-long learners and compassionate individuals, responsible to themselves and to the nation.
Our Vision: Passion and integrity in all endeavour.
Our Motto: Florescat Concordia (‘Let Harmony Abound’).
