Yellow Medicine River

The Yellow Medicine River is a tributary of the Minnesota River in southwestern Minnesota. Its watershed, which drains 653 square miles (1691 square kilometers), is part of the Hawk Creek-Yellow Medicine River Major Watershed. The Yellow Medicine River tributaries include the north and south branches of the Yellow Medicine River, Spring Creek, Mud Creek, and many small drainage ditches. The Yellow Medicine River is located south and west of the Minnesota River.
The river's name is a translation of Dakota name "pijutazee," ("huta" meaning "root," "zi" meaning "yellow," and "kapi" meaning "they dig.") The Dakota dug the yellow root of the moonseed plant for medicinal purposes.The name is also used by one of the counties through which the river flows.
