Yelizovo

Yelizovo (Russian: Е́лизово) is a town in Kamchatka Oblast, Russia, located on the Avacha River 32 km north-west of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at 53°10′60″N, 158°22′60″E. Population: 41,533 (2002 Census); 46,929 (1989 Census).

Founded in 1848 as the village (selo) of Stary Ostrog (Ста́рый Остро́г), it was renamed Zavoyko (Заво́йко) in 1897, after the Russian admiral Vasily Zavoyko who lead the defense of Petropavlovsk in 1854. The village was renamed Yelizovo in 1923. Urban-type settlement status since 1964; town status since 1975.

Its most notable claim to fame is serving as the host for Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Airport, the largest airport on Kamchatka.
