[edit] Back To The Future
The song makes references to the Back To The Future series of films, including references to the flux capacitor, and the fact that the time machine in the song is "like one in a film I've seen".
[edit] Busted version
Busted's original version of "Year 3000" was released as a single in 2003 in the United Kingdom. Upon release, the single was a big success in Europe, reaching #2 on the UK and Irish Charts, while reaching the Top 20 in Austria, Belgium, and the Netherlands, and reaching #21 in Germany.
[edit] The Jonas Brothers version
The Jonas Brothers covered and released "Year 3000" in 2006. To make their version more radio-friendly towards teenagers and kids, some of the lyrics from the original song were changed. For example, in the original version by Busted, it says "and your great-great-great granddaughter is pretty fine", while their version says "and your great-great-great granddaughter is doing fine". Also, the Jonas Brothers' "7th album ... outsold Kelly Clarkson" instead of Michael Jackson.
Although the song was released in 2006, the song did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100 until early 2007 when the song finally debuted at #40, becoming the group's first single to chart and becoming their first Top 40 single. The high debut was probably credited towards high digital sales of the single and high radio airplay on Radio Disney (although not receiving any airplay from mainstream radio stations). To date, the single has reached #31 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is still on the chart.
