Yared Tesfaye is a musician from Ethiopia, currently living in Toronto.

He grew up singing in a church choir both in traditional Ethiopian church Ge'ez and in the latin church music, learning music at home with his mother and his sisters.

Yared started playing bass guitar with his first band the "Nile Band" in 1970. Yared has worked with many bands in the 1980 as a back up singer for different bands mainly Salsa music from Haiti and Martinique. He formed a Canadian band with friends under the name "Mother Tongue", which has been nominated twice for the Canadian Juno Awards. Most of his songs are political. Because another band from the U.S had the same name Sony forced Yared to change its name; Yared settled with the name "Ashkaru" meaning "let it be". Yared left the music business in 1996 but continued his musicianship, working with different cultures.

Yared has written a book under the title To all the bastards I love based on true experience, as well as proving a history of Ethiopian music back to the 6th century. Yared plays washint (Ethiopian flute). He will be performing a solo tour in the summer 2005.
