Yantai University (Chinese: 烟台大学) is a university in Yantai, Shandong, China.

Yantai University was established in 1984 and has around 20,000 students. It has academic links with the United Kingdom, Canada, Norway and the United States.

There usually are a number of teachers drawn from the USA, UK and Canada working at the university; mainly in the large English department although one or two teachers work in the business studies faculty. It is also home to overseas students who are studying Chinese language.

The university is a twenty five minutes ride away from the city centre by No10 and No7 bus, both of which terminate outside the railway station and quite close to one of the several long-distance bus stations in the city. The Coal College now renamed Shandong Institute is no more than a fifteen minute walk from the university's north gate.

For a time, Yantai University - like the Shandong Institute - suffered at the hands of foreign 'teachers' who had gone there to promote their own particular religions whilst teaching. This has since been sorted out. The endemic corruption of the university also seems to have been tackled,if not quite eradicated, by new management around 2004.[citation needed]

By no means could Yantai be described as a 'high level' university, though much is being done to raise its status and sort out its internal problems. Class sizes are now much reduced from up to 90 students down to more manageable and realistic sizes.
