Yanceyville, North Carolina

Yanceyville, first incorporated in 1833, is a town in Caswell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,091 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Caswell CountyGR6, and has been such since 1792 (although called Caswell Court House until 1833).

There remains some uncertainty as to the person for whom Yanceyville is named. Some say it is named for James Yancey (1768-1829). Others claim it is named for his younger brother, Bartlett Yancey, Jr. (1785-1828). A few believe the name honored the entire Yancey family, long prominent in the area.

Yanceyville is located at 36°24′25″N, 79°20′30″W (36.407037, -79.341545)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 12.1 km² (4.7 mi²). 12.0 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (0.85%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 2,091 people, 658 households, and 400 families residing in the town. The population density was 174.0/km² (450.9/mi²). There were 748 housing units at an average density of 62.2/km² (161.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 44.29% White, 53.99% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.33% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.00% of the population.

There were 658 households out of which 29.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.0% were married couples living together, 24.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% were non-families. 36.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.88.

In the town the population was spread out with 19.6% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 32.9% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 126.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 138.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $20,353, and the median income for a family was $26,417. Males had a median income of $24,632 versus $20,398 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,956. About 23.3% of families and 27.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 41.7% of those under age 18 and 24.1% of those age 65 or over.
