[edit] The sticks
The sticks often have pictures of various animals on them with quotes relating to that animal. The quotes are in English, but often appear unorthodox to native English speakers. Examples of these animal quotes include-
1. Zebra - herbivore
2. Octopus - lucky number: 8
3. Starfish - star + fish
4. Cat - say meow
5. Rhinoceros - think big
6. Bat - only in the night
7. Squirrel - your best friend
8. Rabbit - eat more carrots
9. Horse - gallop away
10. Squid - black ink
11. Beetle - lucky color: brown
12. Seal - loves to sun tan
13. Sheep - wool sweaters
14. Stag Beetle - love it
15. Whale - biggesy (sic) mammal
16. Giraffe - tallest mammal
17. Fox - beware of lies
And the mysterious ones "golden egg" and "golden log."
Some of the animal-related quotes relate not to facts about the animals, but instead to the noise the animal makes, which is printed in a Japanese-influenced English dialect. For example:
1. Chicken - kokekokko
2. Cow - Muuuuu
[edit] Flavors
Yan-yans come in a variety of flavors. They include vanilla sticks and chocolate cream, vanilla sticks and strawberry cream, and chocolate sticks and vanilla cream.
[edit] Relation to Pocky
Pocky is a similar Japanese snack which includes thinner sticks pre-dipped in cream. The cream comes in a much wider variety of flavors such as green tea cream or honey-flavored cream. Yan-yans are dipped by the consumer themselves, and come in a more limited assortment of flavors. In general Pocky is better known, but the popularity of Yan-Yans is considerable in its own right.
