[edit] About this category

who on earth would look for, or think of, a category named "Yale University units"? - Nunh-huh 02:35, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Probably nobody. This category is created to collect relevant sub-categories. There had been similiar category like Category:New York University units before this category was created. It also seems that nobody will look for a category named "Category:Alumni by university in the United States". But it is probably useful. --Neo-Jay 03:45, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
But "units"? A University is not composed of "units". It's a misclassification. Why not "Yale University schools"? - Nunh-huh 05:03, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Of course we can creat a category named "Yale University schools", but "Units" is a broader concept. It can include institutions, organizations, associations, etc. See, e.g., Category:New York University units. --Neo-Jay 05:18, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Yes, or just use the yet broader one "Yale University", as "units" seems to mean nothing. This is an inappropriate and useless caetogory that just means "something associated with Yale University. For which "Yale University" would be just as meaningful a category. - Nunh-huh 05:43, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Yes, we can simply put all the categories of schools, institutions, organizations, etc directly under Category:Yale University. In the same logic, We can also put all the categories of alumni, basketabll players, faculty, etc directly under Category:Yale University, rather than Category:Yale University people. If Category:Yale University units has no reason to exist, then Category:Yale University people also should be deleted. --Neo-Jay 13:42, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
People is a reasonable classification. (though separate alumni and faculty classifications would be better). But "units" makes no sense; it's not a logical classification of a part of a university. Schools, buildings, would be; as they are part of the way a university is organized; no university that I know of consists of "units". Note that everything classified in this category is a school. Also note that nothing classified here is known as a "unit". - Nunh-huh 14:57, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
This category potentially can include Yale Glee Club, Yale Political Union, Skull and Bones, Sterling Memorial Library, Yale Conservative Party, Yale Dramatic Association, Yale University Press, etc. Well, if you still think this category makes no sence, you can ask for deletion. Thanks. --Neo-Jay 15:38, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Of course it makes no sense. In what sense is "Skull and Bones" a "unit" of Yale University? Or the Glee Club? Or most of the things you mention? - Nunh-huh 15:41, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Then can they be categorized as "Yale University organizations"? That's fine to me. So probably both Cateory:Yale University schools and Category:Yale University organizations need to be created. I am not a native English speaker. I just follow PaulHanson, who claims to be a native English speaker and created Category:New York University units. If you are an expert on English, you can ask for deletion. Thanks. --Neo-Jay 15:58, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
I have asked for the deletion. Some of the items you've named are organizations, some are publications, some are schools, etc. There's no reason to have a classification that encompases both schools and organizations. The only thing they have in common are slightly different sorts of affiliation to a university. - Nunh-huh 16:17, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Fine. I will wait and see the result. Thanks. --Neo-Jay 16:24, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
