Yahualica is a municipality in the north of Jalisco.

The name Yahualica is derived from the indigenous name Ayahuallican, Yahualican, Ahualica or Yagualica, meaning "land surrounded by hills".

By 1165 the region's inhabitants were the Tecuexes, who later fought the Aztecs for control of the territory.

In about 1530 the Spanish, led by Cristóbal de Oñate, conquered the region.
