[edit] Origin of Xie

Located somewhere in present-day Henan province. Zhou Xuan Wang (827–781 bc) of the Western Zhou dynasty, granted this area to his mother's family, and the descendants of Shen Bo(mother's brother) adopted the place name Xie as their surname. Xie means 'to thank'.

[edit] Xie Historical Family Tree and Alliances

During the Eastern Jin and the Southern Dynasties period, the Yuan (袁) clan of the Chen (陳) state established extensive marriage alliances with the major clans Wang 王, Xiao 萧, and especially the Xie 謝, whose ancestral lands were in the same commandery of Chen.

Chen You Liang (陳友諒), a fisherman from the Ming Dynasty was originally from the Xie clan, but his ancestors married into the Chen family and adopted the Chen surname because they only had daughters and no sons to carry on the family line.

[edit] What does it mean?

When used as a verb, Xie means : to express gratitude; to thank. When used as a noun, it means : gratitude; thanks.

e.g. Xie Xie Ni = thanking you or thank you.

[edit] How do you read it?

Xie is the pinyin romanization of the Mandarin word 謝. An "x" in pinyin is similar to an English "sh", except that the tip of the tongue touches just below the lower front teeth instead of being curled up against the roof of the mouth. The "ie" in Xie sounds like "ye". It should be pronounced with a downward inflection. It should not be read as "zee" or "shay", which are common mistakes made by Westerners.
