Xidian University (西安电子科技大学) is a university located in Xi'an, Shaanxi, People's Republic of China. The university is regarded by some as having strong science and engineering programs.

Xidian University is among an elite class of institutes for higher education selected nationally as part of China's State educational development project labeled "211". Xidian is a key national university dedicated primarily to electronic technology and information which is integrated with a wide range of academic subjects including engineering, physical science, social science, foreign languages and business management. In many years since Xidian University was founded in 1931, it has grown rapidly in both size and prestige. Now it has become a base of education and high-tech research in the field of electronic information.

The university was founded in 1931 in Ruijin (瑞金), Jiangxi as the Radio School of the Central Military Committee (中央军委无线电学校). It was the first technical school established by the Communist Party of China. Later, the school was moved from Zhangjiakou, Hebei to Xi'an in 1958. It was one of the first 20 national key universities in 1959. It was renamed the People's Liberation Army Institute of Telecommunication Engineering (中国人民解放军军事电信工程学院) in 1960. In 1966, it was renamed Northwest Institute of Telecommunication Engineering (西北电讯工程学院), and was no longer a military institute. In 1988, its name was changed to the current one.

In the 2006 Ranklist of Chinese University Engineering Programs, the Telecommunications Engineering Program in Xidian University ranked No.1, the Network Engineering Program ranked No.2 and the Electronic Information Warfare Technology Program ranked No.1.

Xidian University is organized into 15 schools: Telecommunications, Electronic Engineering, Computing, Technical Physics, Mechno-Electronic, Management, Science, and Humanities. Xidian has established a College for Continuing Education and a Graduate School for postgraduate studies. It offers over 23 specialties for undergraduates and postgraduates.

Xidian University is home to 30,000 students, with over 7,000 postgraduates and over 20,000 undergraduates. The faculty of Xidian University, numbering over 2800, constitutes 1500 academic and technical staff. A team of 8 academician of the China Academy of Sciences, 53 Ph.D. advisors and over 600 senior degree staff make up the professional staff. Young and middle age holders of doctoral and master's degrees compose 40% of the faculty.

Xidian University has been accredited to grant doctoral degrees for 11 doctoral programs, grant master's degrees for 26 master's programs, and establish national level interdisciplinary education for electric and electronic engineering. Xidian has the approval to examine and designate professors and advisors to doctoral students.

Xidian University has a commitment to excellence in both teaching and research as is demonstrated by the number and variety of its study facilities. They include: [three national key laboratories] and over 30 research institutes and research centers. The facilities of 75 research laboratories, a multimedia video-audio center, training workshops and 4 experimental centers are essential for teaching. About 80% of teaching faculty hold positions in the research activities. Xidian's library has an inventory of over one million books. The computer communications network of the University provides access to national and international universities.

Xidian University is located in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, China. Its campus has beautiful surroundings and complete facilities. Xi'an, an ancient cultural city in China, served intermittently as the capital of eleven dynasties. It has many historical remains. The Terra-Cotta Army has earned the name of the Eighth Wonder of the World. Xi'an is the ideal city to study Chinese culture and history.
