[edit] History

Z90 was once a popular album rock station in the 1970's and 1980's, before they went to a KQLZ-type "Pirate Radio" 'rock 40' format in 1989. On April 5, 1990 they switched formats to Rhythmic Contemporary Hit Radio, with a Dance-leaning direction. However by 1998 they began focusing more on a R&B/Hip-Hop product, which they still continue with today.

In 2004 they got new competition from XHMORE-FM, who has managed to cut into Z90's audience and ratings. Despite that setback Z90 still has higher cumes than XHMORE-FM in terms of audience shares. They have also regained the lead in the markets' Rhythmic Contemporary war.

[edit] Programming

z90.3 is a Rhythmic Contemporary-formatted radio station that ranges from typical hip-hop and R&B to Pop and Hispanic Rhythmic. This is due to the fact that San Diego is a very diversified Town that has various music tastes. XHTZ is owned by Finest City Broadcasting.

On July 25, 2005, Clear Channel Broadcasting transferred the programming and local marketing arrangements of XHITZ, along with XETRA-FM and XHRM-FM 92.5 to Finest City Broadcasting, a new company under the direction of former Clear Channel/San Diego VP/Market Manager Mike Glickenhaus. Finest City took over operations on December 1, 2005.
