Xh (digraph)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Xh is a digraph consisting of the letters X and H. It is used in only a few writing systems.

In Albanian, xh represents the sound of the voiced postalveolar affricate consonant /dʒ/, i.e. the same sound that is represented, in English orthography, by the letter j (as in jet, John), or, sometimes, by the letter g (as in gentle). An example is the surname Hoxha, that is pronounced /'hɔʤa/.

In Zulu and Xhosa it represents the voiceless aspirated lateral alveolar click [kǁʰ], for example in the name of the language Xhosa [ˈkǁʰoːsa].
