[edit] Configuration
The XFA-27's basic description is that of a fighter with swing-wings reminiscient of a Tomcat or some similar fighter (some have even related it to the Valkyrie series craft, specifically the VF-11_Thunderbolt, of the Macross anime series), fitted with front canards and a tailplane where the bottom fins are treated as elevators with large amounts of negative dihedral, and the tailfins are canted outwards. The craft is stealthy, with design cues around the nose and cockpit that resemble an elongated F-22.
[edit] Ace Combat 2 XFA-27
The XFA-27 was the very first "super plane" in the Ace Combat series. This plane was created by Namco to be as close to a perfect fighter as it could be made and still seem semi-realistic. This trend would be carried on by several aircraft in Ace Combat 3, the X-02 Wyvern of Ace Combat 4, and both the Wyvern and the ADF-01 Falken in Ace Combat 5, and the Falken, Wyvern, and ADFX-01 Morgan Ace Combat Zero. Its iteration in Ace Combat 2 wore white paint with red striping similar to certain X-planes in America's inventory (e.g. the X-29), suggesting the plane is still experimental in Ace Combat 2's particular place in the series' timeline. Its signature move is the capability to shoot four missiles at once, where all other aircraft in Ace Combat 2 could only launch two.
Performance-wise, it was (as would be expected) spectacular. It bested all others in speed, maneuverability, and combat capability. Most fandom and fan speculation suggests the plane is surprisingly light or at least has an exceptional thrust-to-weight ratio, even if it is complex and sophisticated. In the real world, swing-wing aircraft pay a hefty weight penalty and are complex craft, increasing the chance for mechanical failure.
[edit] Ace Combat X XFA-27
This craft is painted in low-visibility gray camouflage. The plane's famous four missile effect isn't available at purchase, but a part for the plane can be bought and added to give it this ability. You can fire 6 missiles with this piece.(4 normal, 2 QAAM) though the plane cannot fire four QAAMs at once. Many planes can fire several missiles at once, but they are XLAA or XMAA missiles and have a limited ammunition count. The XFA 27 will use missiles out of its 88+ missile count along with 12 QAAMs. However, because of the timeline gap between Ace Combat 2 and Ace Combat X, a gap of around twenty years, the continued status of this plane as the most powerful aircraft is in doubt. The player will find newer aircraft such as the XFA-24A Apalis, the XR-45 Cariburn, and the YR-302 Fregata that may parallel or exceed the performance of this aircraft.
However, this plane is given a reprieve because it is among several customizable aircraft in Ace Combat X. With the right equipment, the XFA-27 can be refitted to near its former Ace Combat 2 performance.
[edit] Trivia
- The part in Ace Combat X that allows the XFA-27A to fire four standard missiles at one time is called the Scarface MBS. "Scarface" is the name of the mercenary team which the player is the flight lead of in Ace Combat 2, where the XFA-27 first appeared.
- The XFA-27 is sometimes referred to as the "Phoenix.". "Phoenix" is the official squadron logo of the Scarface Squadron in Ace Combat 2.
- If the player gets a 100% kill rate in Ace Combat X (destroys enough targets over ownership of the aircraft to get the 100% mark), a special paintjob is unlocked for the XFA-27: the white-and-red design it sported in Ace Combat 2.
- In Operation X of Ace Combat X, if the player fights quickly enough, a special ace will rise up to attack the player: none other than Scarface One of Ace Combat 2 and the original owner of the XFA-27.
