[edit] History

The station originally signed on the air back in 1963 as WPGH-FM, and with a power of 20,000 watts. In 1967 another FM license was dropped in Pittsburgh at 104.7. The WPGH calls went to 104.7, and the station at 100.7 became known as WNUF (for New FM).

For most of its early years, WNUF operated from downtown Millvale, about 12 miles south of its city of license. WNUF's offices were co-located with a weekly buy-sell-trade publication called The Green Sheet, both of which were owned by Milton Hammond. The station became famous for its format of Big Band music, as well as the fact that it was one of the few FM stations that broadcast in mono.

Prior to their flip to the current format in 2000 (which is their most successful to date), WZPT's previous formats included '70s, country, rhythmic top 40, modern rock (Pittsburgh's first station with this format, but it only lasted two years), and big bands. The current format of WZPT, or Star 100.7 as it is now called, is the Hot AC format. They claim to be Pittsburgh's "Best Variety of the 80's, 90's and Today." One of the their more popular music features is "Flashback Friday" consisting of all 80's music on Fridays. The rest of the week, Star 100.7 plays a blend of music from contemporary artists like Natasha Bedingfield, Staind and Kelly Clarkson. They also play 90's artists like: The Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox Twenty, and Dave Matthews. Their jock line-up consist of: The Star Morning Show with JR, Kate and Bubba, Kerri Griffith, Jonny Hartwell, Scott Alexander, Jason Bradley, and Shawn Israel.
